Cardano celebrates the sixth anniversary of Shelley's upgrade, and the network moves towards Leos
Cardano celebrates the sixth anniversary of Shelley's upgrade. Shelley's upgrade introduced pledge, decentralized block production and community governance, reshaping the long-term development path of the network. Shelley's upgrade replaced centralized verification by pledge pools, helping Cardano establish 2882 active pledge pools and support 21.56 billion ADA commitments.
Input and output companies are testing the Oboros Leos protocol to improve base layer throughput while preparing for the next phase of Caldano's Dijstra upgrade. The pledge and decentralized block production brought about by Shelley's upgrade are important milestones in the transformation of the blockchain governance model. The anniversary also highlights how the network has evolved from early infrastructure to a more decentralized ecosystem supported by community participation.
According to a post by the Cardano community on the X platform, Shelley's upgrade brought pledge pools, pledge rewards and decentralized block production to the network. The post also noted that Cardano has been running uninterrupted since Byron's hard fork introduced these changes.
Before Shelley's upgrade, Cardano relied on the alliance structure, with only a few nodes responsible for production blocks. However, Byron's reboot prepared the network for decentralization, replacing the original node software with a modular implementation to support future protocol upgrades.
Shelley's upgrade completes this transition, allowing ADA holders to delegate their tokens to pledge pools, expanding community participation while strengthening cybersecurity. As a result, Cardano laid the foundation for a decentralized proof-of-stake ecosystem that remains at the core of its development strategy.
Shelley's legacy supports Cardano's expansion roadmap
Cardano reached another milestone in the first quarter of 2021: pledge pool operators began to take responsibility for the production of every new block. This achievement has completed the transformation of the network from a central certification test and strengthened its decentralized governance model.
According to Cexplorer data, Cardano currently has 2882 active pledge pools, with approximately 21.56 billion ADA as real-time pledges. These data demonstrate the continued participation of verifiers and principals while supporting the long-term security of the blockchain.
At the same time, I/O companies have shifted their development focus to the Oboros Leos agreement, which is expected to be Cardano's largest expansion and upgrade. Engineers have launched Leos on the public Musashi Dojo test site, and developers are evaluating its performance under different network conditions.
The testing process is divided into five stages, named "earth","water","fire","wind" and "void". Each stage is used to measure protocol stability before developers consider putting the upgrade into production.
Input and output companies estimate that Obolos Leos could increase Cardano's base layer throughput by five to twenty times. In addition, the Van Rosen hard fork activated earlier this month laid the technical foundation for the Dijstella era upgrade that will bring Leos to the main network.
Conclusion
Shelley's upgrade changed Cardano's pledge model, and six years later, the network continues to build on this basis through greater scalability initiatives. The Leos upgrade represents the next stage in Cardano's roadmap, as developers are working to increase trading capacity while maintaining the decentralization principles established in Shelley's era.
