Six years of uninterrupted pledge
Cardano celebrates the sixth anniversary of the Shelley hard fork. This upgrade in July 2020 transformed the network from a consortium system to a community-driven blockchain. The Shelley era introduced pledge pools and delegation functions, established a decentralized ledger structure, and built a new economic incentive mechanism through ADA pledges.
By the first quarter of 2021, Cardano's Pledged Pool Operators (SPO) community will begin to independently produce all new blocks on the network, completing the transition to community-driven block production. Since then, the network has continuously processed 9.25 million blocks, spanning 439 eras without interruption.
Current web browser data shows that there are 2882 active pledge pools, and the real-time pledge volume is recorded at 21.56 billion ADAs, which shows that the participation framework established six years ago is still the core cornerstone of network security and consensus.
Oboros Leos: The next major leap
This anniversary coincides with a critical juncture in the development of the agreement. Input Output is currently advancing Ouroboros Leios, its most ambitious expansion plan to date.
Van Rossem is a preliminary upgrade from Oberos Leos, a parallelized consensus upgrade currently under testing and expected to last until 2026. The plan aims to increase throughput to approximately 30 to 65 times current levels and aims to exceed 1000 transactions per second.
The basic work of Leos is already being laid. Cardano has activated the Van Rosen hard fork and upgraded the main network to version 11 of the protocol, which is expected to reduce smart contract execution costs and lay the foundation for Oberos Leos.
Van Rosen is Cardano's first hard fork approved by on-chain governance, marking a milestone at the governance level. Its strategic goals are forward-looking: it lays the technical foundation for the upcoming Dijkstra era, which is expected to introduce Oberos Leos-a throughput expansion design planned to be launched on the main network by the end of 2026.
