Boltz suspended service due to a wave of AI-assisted hacking attacks

Boltz, an unmanaged bitcoin exchange service provider, said it has suspended its service with a resumption time until further notice after an increase in AI-assisted hacking incidents in recent months.

Boltz posted on the X platform on Monday that the decision was due to the continued increase in "automated AI-assisted detection" encountered by its infrastructure this year. "In the past few months... we have dealt with multiple exploitations. It's contained every time, but the pattern is clear: Attackers iterate faster than a team our size can discover and patch vulnerabilities." "After reviewing the results of our recent security scans, we cannot responsibly re-enable Boltz redemption, especially as we are being actively attacked by multiple resource-rich groups while racing against time to deploy fixes."

Boltz's operational suspension highlights the dilemma faced by small development teams-the speed at which attackers discover vulnerabilities and adjust their exploitation methods makes them difficult to respond.

"In the past few days alone, we have seen a sharp acceleration of attacks, and we believe this asymmetry will not be reversed." Boltz said.

Solana security chiefs call for automated defense

In July this year, Michael Coates, the Solana Foundation's new chief information security officer, said that in the AI era, there is a need to move towards automated defense. "Our industry is at a critical point where humans cannot respond to these threats on a scale." "The only way out is to have an autonomous defense system that runs at machine speed," Coates said.

PayPerQ, a pay-as-you-prompted AI service, which accepts payments in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, also said it has been responding to a surge in exploits, which may involve AI-driven incidents. "For months, we have been guarding against exploits every other week, and we believe the majority of them are AI-driven. These are very dangerous times."

Risk-free user funds

Boltz allows users to perform unmanaged, trust-free atomic exchanges to transfer Bitcoin and assets denominated in Bitcoin between the main network and different layers of Bitcoin, such as the Lightning Network and the Liquid Network.

DefiLlama data shows that as of the time of writing, Boltz had locked in a total value of US$180,860.

Boltz said user funds were never at risk because all Boltz conversions use advanced cryptographic technology and are in an unmanaged model, which means users always retain full control of assets during the redemption process.

Boltz said its API will remain open to process refunds and the customer service team will remain online. "What we are seeing is a major paradigm shift affecting Bitcoin services running on an open source stack, which requires careful analysis. Don't expect redemption services to resume anytime soon."
