Chainlink completes technical demonstration at the Bank of England Synchronization Laboratory
Chainlink has completed a hands-on demonstration in the Bank of England's Synchronisation Lab, using the Chainlink runtime environment (CRE) to bridge central bank currency to tokenized assets on the public blockchain. This achievement provides a specific proof of concept for real-time atomic settlement between traditional financial infrastructure and decentralized ledgers.
Exploration within the Sync Lab
Chainlink was invited to participate in the Bank of England's Sync Lab, a platform designed to validate the bank's upgraded RTGS service (RT2) by demonstrating a range of diverse use cases that reflect broad industry interests. The laboratory brought together 18 institutions to explore the coordination mechanism between the pound balance held by the central bank and the securities recorded on the distributed ledger. The goal is to test whether atomic settlement-where payments occur simultaneously with asset transfers-can operate safely and efficiently within the UK's real-time full settlement system.
The Bank of England confirmed that this laboratory will not involve real funds and will not grant any regulatory approval, and the results will help provide a design reference for the possibility of direct synchronization in the future. Three dedicated interfaces that work together were deployed in the demonstration: a synchronous operator interface, a CRE monitoring hub, and a dedicated central bank confirmation portal. Each interface is responsible for a separate link in the cross-chain transaction process.
CRE as an organization-level orchestration layer
The Chainlink runtime environment (CRE) serves as an orchestration layer that connects fragmented systems, allowing Chainlink interoperability standards and data standards to run in any environment. It enables atomic or hybrid settlement across chains and traditional systems. From stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, to arriving silver for settlement and on-chain data distribution, a series of advanced on-chain financial use cases have been built and deployed on CRE by leading institutions, Web2 enterprises and Web3 protocols. The Bank of England pilot project adds sovereign-level verification to this achievement.
As the laboratory continues to advance into 2026, its results are expected to provide empirical evidence on how chain-linked securities interact with central bank currencies. These findings may help define how the UK financial system will ultimately migrate on-chain-from wholesale securities clearing to new digital cash backing tools.
