Ethereum developers have been accused of suppressing objections to EIP-8363, and the foundation has simultaneously promoted the construction of quantum-resistant infrastructure.
Summary of key points
Critics of EIP-8363 accuse core developers of deleting comments opposing setting a pledge reward cap. Verifier voting data shows that the support rate is only 3%, and the opposition rate is as high as 97%. Ethereum developers also plan to advance quantum resistance research in 2027 and strive to complete Layer 1 deployment in 2028.
EIP-8363 Dispute
Gabriel Shapiro, a pro-cryptocurrency lawyer, said that a core Ethereum developer deleted about 50 discussion posts about EIP-8363 on the ETH Magicians forum. The forum is a platform for researchers, developers and community members to discuss technology proposals. Shapiro said most of the deleted posts came from critics, a move he called a "dirty trick."
A developer involved in the deletion incident said that the moderator targeted duplicate accounts or "puppet accounts" created by opponents, which allegedly used "AI-generated spam" to oppose the pledge proposal. Another analyst believes that deleting comments is wrong and may aggravate opposition.
Aave CEO Stani Kurechev called the tactics "worrying," and Ether.Fi's Mike Silagadze joined the opposition in the DeFi field. They pointed out that the proposal could affect the Ethereum credit market and independent pledgers. As of writing, only 3% of the validators voted in favor and 97% opposed.
Quantum Resistance Project
Proposal EIP-8363 stipulates that if the pledged ETH reaches 50% of the circulating supply, the pledge reward will be reduced to zero. The pledge ratio has currently reached a record high of 35%. If current pledge demand continues to grow, this threshold may be triggered soon.
At the same time, core developers of Ethereum plan to accelerate research on quantum resistance starting in 2027, with the goal of full deployment to Layer 1 in 2028. Researcher Justin Drake said the Ethereum Foundation's post-quantum team is moving forward at an "extremely fast pace" and the foundation is switching from Poseidon algorithm to SHA or BLAKE hash algorithms.
The EIP-8363 dispute occurred during a period of record pledge demand. Currently, 35% of the circulating ETH has been pledged, close to the 50% upper limit set by the proposal. During the debate, the price of ETH fell below $1900, and the future direction of the proposal and its potential market impact remain unresolved.
