On August 18, blockchain analysis platform Onchain Lens reported that Multicoin Capital transferred 172,710 HYPE tokens, worth approximately US$10.15 million, to Coinbase Prime. The move sparked speculation that one of HYPE's most prominent institutional holders could sell off.

Impact of transfer on the market

HYPE tokens, supported by the Hyperliquid decentralized exchange, have recently ranked among the top ten crypto asset market value. According to DefiLlama, its market value is about $13 billion, and its current trading price is close to $58.59. Large-scale token transfers have the potential to significantly affect market sentiment.

Although a direct sell-off has not yet been confirmed, market observers often view large inflows of funds into mainstream exchanges as an early signal that a possible liquidation is possible. Investors have become more vigilant about such transfers as the token remains well below its June peak of $76.87.

Multicoin Capital's position in HYPE

Despite this transfer, as a crypto investment institution actively supporting emerging blockchain projects, Multicoin Capital is still the main holder of HYPE. According to Onchain Lens, the company still holds approximately 2.16 million HYPEs worth nearly $126.63 million. As a result, the shift is more like a relatively modest reduction than a large-scale exit.

Coinbase Prime is an institutional platform operated by Coinbase that provides custody, trading and financing solutions to large clients. Movements to such platforms are often classified as potential sell-off preparation or custody management. Onchain Lens described the deal as a "possible sale" and traders need to be cautious because it involves well-known institutions.

Small Dictionary:

Multicoin Capital is a well-known digital asset investment company that focuses on token, blockchain projects, and supports new Web3 infrastructure initiatives.

Exchange Inflows and Liquidity Concerns

The market interprets the large amount of token inflows into exchanges as an increase in supply, which may put downward pressure on prices. Although HYPE's open interest is approximately US$11.8 billion, its liquidity is still lower than that of large cryptocurrencies, amplifying the impact of large-scale transactions on prices.

Following a series of significant token transfers by Hyperliquid's largest holder, Multicoin Capital's follow-up actions continue to be closely watched by the market.

Key Data Overview

HYPE Current Price: US$58.59
June Peak Price: US$76.87
Current Market Value: US$13 billion
Open Interest: US$11.8 billion
Multicoin Remaining Positions: 2.16 million (US$126.63 million)
Recent transfers: 172,710 (US$10.15 million)

Multicoin Capital continues to face speculation about its intentions as large transfers to exchanges could unsettle investors, especially with limited liquidity and high open interest.

Previous statements and ongoing discussions

In July this year, Multicoin Capital and Paradigm jointly executed a $291 million HYPE de-pledge operation, which triggered price fluctuations. Tushar Jain, co-founder of Multicoin Capital, later said that the de-pledge was intended to enhance privacy and allow wallet rotation, rather than initiating a sell-off. On-chain analytics firm Markets Alpha also supported this claim by showing that tokens were transferred to escrow providers rather than exchanges.

However, this transfer is different-the tokens have entered Coinbase Prime, a more direct institutional-level trading platform for related transactions and settlements. This difference in transaction destinations has brought more attention to the $10.15 million transfer, although there is still no evidence that an actual sell-off has occurred.

Multicoin Capital has previously stated that the wallet transfer is for privacy and operational security, rather than an immediate sale. This highlights the ongoing debate about investors 'intentions during large crypto asset transfers.

HYPE's Fundamental Outlook

Despite short-term selling pressure, Hyperliquid reports that its trading volume will be approximately US$2.9 trillion in 2025, revenue will reach US$873 million, accounting for nearly 59% of open interest shares in the decentralized derivatives market. According to Multicoin Capital's June valuation report, almost all agreement revenue was used for HYPE buybacks and subsequent destruction, highlighting the deflationary structure of the token.

Analysts at Multicoin estimate in their forecast that HYPE may eventually reach approximately US$319 by 2028, but the actual result may depend on market dynamics and investor behavior during the period.

Although the shift has exacerbated short-term speculative sentiment, Multicoin Capital still holds a large position in HYPE, ensuring that it will continue to be the focus of traders following large-scale token movements.
