Multicoin transfers $10 million in HYPE to Coinbase Prime, sparking sell-off scare

Multicoin Capital's transfer of US$10.15 million in HYPE tokens to the exchange has attracted market attention

On August 18, a blockchain tracking agency reported that Multicoin Capital had transferred approximately 172,710 HYPEs (worth approximately US$10.15 million) to Coinbase Prime. The platform is often regarded by traders as a destination associated with selling.

Given that HYPE currently ranks among the top ten cryptocurrencies in market capitalisation, the actions of this major institutional supporter are likely to attract widespread attention far beyond its project's user base. According to a data platform, HYPE's current market value is close to US$13 billion, and its price is approximately US$58.59. At this market value, token transfers are by no means isolated incidents. Large transfers to exchanges can quickly reshape traders 'expectations of potential risks in the market.

Multicoin still holds a large number of positions

If compared with Multicoin's current total positions, this shift of US$10.15 million is actually insignificant. The tracker estimates that the fund still holds approximately 2.16 million HYPEs, currently worth approximately US$126.63 million. In other words, this shift is more like a minor adjustment than a complete exit. Coinbase Prime is Coinbase's institutional platform that provides custody, execution and funding services to institutional customers. It is also a channel for institutions to sell large positions through regulated markets. The tracking agency classified the transfer as a "possible sale" to warn the trading community.

Why the market views exchange inflows as a warning

This concern is not groundless. According to a data platform, HYPE's trading price is well below its June high of US$76.87; meanwhile, the volume of open contracts is close to US$11.8 billion. This creates a large number of leveraged positions that could exacerbate any sudden downward swings. A trader transfers tokens to an exchange as a signal for supply to enter the market. Since HYPE is still less liquid than mainstream cryptocurrencies, even experienced traders may find the order book difficult to cope with. After a summer of observing the flow of tokens from HYPE's largest holders, any further transfer of Multicoin has the market on alert.

Multicoin previously denied intention to sell

Multicoin has previously refuted similar rumors. For example, in late July, after Multicoin and Paradigm unpledged HYPE tokens worth a total of US$291 million, causing the HYPE price to fall below US$60, Multicoin co-founder Tushar Jain issued a statement saying: "We did not release the pledge for sale," and said the move was purely for privacy and wallet rotation purposes. At the time, chain experts from a market institution confirmed this reason, showing that the tokens were being transferred to custody rather than exchanges. What makes this transfer important is the change in destination: Coinbase Prime provides a more direct settlement path. This does not prove that the tokens have been sold, but explains why a $10 million transfer makes headlines.

Fundamental support for HYPE still exists

Negative assessments also need to be considered in conjunction with the fundamental data of HYPE projects. In its June valuation report, Multicoin pointed out that the platform generated approximately US$873 million in revenue from approximately US$2.9 trillion in trading volume in 2025, which accounted for more than 59% of the open interest volume in the DeFi perpetual contract market. HYPE's token economics is another part of the bullish argument. About 99% of the agreement revenue was used to repurchase HYPE, and the repurchased tokens were subsequently destroyed. In the same report, Multicoin believes that HYPE prices could reach about $319 by 2028.

A $10.15 million shift does not ultimately resolve the debate between fundamentals and current short-term selling pressures. However, given that Multicoin still holds more than US$100 million in HYPE, any major event involving the Multicoin HYPE wallet will inevitably have a significant impact on market movements.
