BNB Chain activates the Pasteur hard fork, introducing three security and performance improvements
According to news, BNB Chain activated the Pasteur hard fork on the BNB intelligent chain main network at 02:30 UTC on August 25, introducing three changes to cross-chain bridge security, verifier authorization and block capacity. The fork caused no major disruption, and the BSC chain continued to block at the existing 450-millisecond interval.
Pasteur Changes
Pasteur integrates BEP-682, BEP-695, and BEP-675 into the broader BEP-673 upgrade plan. These changes have been running on BSC's Chapel test network since July 21 and were later deployed to the main network.
BEP-682 changes the way the network verifies lightweight blocks submitted over cross-chain infrastructure: the system now rejects duplicate verifier entries before calculating whether voting thresholds have been met, closing vulnerabilities that could make bridge approvals appear to have more independent support.
Verifier and Governance Repair
BEP-695 fixes vulnerabilities in verifier key rotation, penalty mechanisms and governance. When a verifier changes its operation key, the old key loses management rights, and the verifier cannot escape pending penalties by rotating the key. The updated contract will also check the original signer before calculating proxy votes, preventing restricted addresses from participating in governance through off-chain signatures. Node operators need to upgrade to client v1.7.7 to complete this upgrade.
More trading space
BEP-675 introduces an optional path that allows professional builders to submit executed blocks, allowing verifiers to sign without having to re-perform a full calculation. The builder can still use the original process, and the new path needs to be enabled through the network remote procedure call interface. In the controlled QANet test, throughput increased from 1,237 transactions per second to 2,324 transactions, and average fuel consumption per block increased from 46.35 million to 84.15 million, while the 450-millisecond exit time remained unchanged with the 100 million fuel cap. BNB Chain pointed out that the performance data came from controlled testing rather than actual operation of the main network, and that it was not reported that the bridging vulnerability had been exploited, calling the change a preventive measure. Cross-chain bridges have accumulated billions of dollars in losses due to key leaks, contract flaws and weak message verification, so Pasteur's inspection mechanism is a timely strengthening step.
This upgrade follows the recent bridging security incident in BNB Chain, highlighting that cross-chain infrastructure remains the primary target of attack.
