Kirby admitted that Coinbase and Base lost the trust of cryptographic native users due to avoidable errors.

Jordan Fish, product director at Coinbase, better known as Cobie, said that Coinbase and Base have lost the trust of cryptographic native users after a series of avoidable errors. Previously, Rune questioned Base's ability to attract users on the chain. In response, Kirby confirmed that he had recently taken over the leadership of Base applications and Coinbase's trading products, while Jesse Pollak continued to be responsible for Base's blockchain business.

The leadership change stems from community criticism

According to Kirby, he only took charge of Base apps a few days ago. He also clarified that he does not manage the Base blockchain itself. His comments came after Rune questioned whether Base could rebuild community confidence. Rune believes that if trust has been compromised, infrastructure alone may not be able to attract users. Kirby publicly responded by admitting that Coinbase had previously been in what he called an "ivory tower." He added that over time, the gap between the company and crypto native users grew wider. In addition, Kirby said Coinbase and Base have lost a lot of goodwill due to a series of avoidable mistakes, including recent incidents. But he believes rebuilding the relationship will take more than a few weeks.

Product focus shifts to users

During the discussion, Kirby outlined his priorities for Base applications. He expressed the hope that the product team can work more closely with users on the chain to create products that users really need. He also acknowledged the criticism surrounding his appointment. According to Kirby, many long-time Base supporters currently have negative views of the project. At the same time, Jesse Pollak confirmed that responsibility for the Base application had been transferred to Kirby. Pollak said he will focus on expanding the Base network. The leadership change came after Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong admitted that Base had made mistakes with content coins. Since then, Base has turned more attention to transactions, payments and artificial intelligence products.

Base continues to expand its infrastructure

While management adjustments, Base also continues to develop its network infrastructure. Recently, the network activated the B20 token standard for stablecoins and tokenized assets. The release follows an upgrade to Beryl's network. Previously, Base also caused consensus issues due to an invalid block, causing block production to be interrupted for nearly two hours. Kirby joined Coinbase after Coinbase acquired Echo in October 2025 for approximately $375 million. Before founding Echo, he built a reputation through the UpOnly podcast and later became an active investor in blockchain infrastructure projects, including EigenLayer, Ethena, Babylon, Monad, MegaETH, Succinct, Espresso Systems, Privy and Turnkey.
