New on-chain lending options on Base Chain: Morpho launches Morpho Midnight
Morpho launched Morpho Midnight on Base Chain, a fixed-rate, fixed-term lending market that operates in parallel with its existing variable rate platform Morpho Blue. The move introduces an intent-driven model in which loans are constructed based on competitive quotes rather than priced by a utilization curve defined by the agreement.
Morpho Midnight has been launched on the Base main website, first supporting multiple term loans from cbBTC and USDC. Morpho said the release was intended to control the scope to gradually advance and ensure safety.
Core Points
Morpho Midnight brings fixed-rate, fixed-term lending services to the Base Chain, complementing Morpho's variable-rate Blue Pool. Loan pricing is driven by quotes: Lenders and borrowers propose interest rates, terms and other terms rather than relying on algorithmic pool utilization curves. Midnight aims to better match the needs of traditional credit markets, where funding costs and repayment plans are clear before borrowing. Initial deployments support multiple terms for cbBTC and USDC, and Morpho said that as the promotion progresses, more integrations and functions may be added in the future.
Landing Base for a fixed period, but using a different pricing engine
DeFi lending has long been difficult to replicate the predictability of traditional finance. In many on-chain markets, borrowing costs fluctuate with utilization, which means lenders and borrowers face pricing that changes over time. Morpho's Midnight aims to bridge this gap by moving away from pool-based algorithmic pricing to the quote market. The system allows participants to propose interest rates, terms and other loan parameters rather than relying on a continuously running utilization curve. Midnight issued loans as fixed debt and matched them through bidding competition.
For institutions and companies, fixed repayment plans help manage capital costs, expected returns and risk exposure more easily. Although the DeFi space can approximate fixed income through complex strategies, specialized fixed-rate lending platforms can reduce reliance on workarounds. Morpho also emphasized that Midnight is not intended to replace Morpho Blue, which still focuses on open-ended pools of variable-rate lending, while Midnight leaves loan risk, interest rates and maturities to market participants, turning these elements into negotiable terms.
How Morpho builds a Midnight design
Morpho initially discussed the fixed-rate approach as part of the broader "Morpho V2" roadmap. The agreement describes an intent-based peer-to-peer market where users can submit custom quotes. Under this model, funds can continue to earn variable returns until they are matched to fixed-rate quotes, and then locked in fixed debt. In April, Morpho named the fixed-rate system Midnight and reiterated that it would complement rather than replace Morpho Blue. Subsequently, Morpho released Midnight's white paper and code base in May. Morpho said the "quote capital" model is designed to avoid recurring problems in fixed-rate DeFi: liquidity lock-in and fragmentation between different maturities.
This design goal is critical because fixed-rate markets can face inherent mismatches: capital providers are not always willing to commit to the precise terms required by borrowers. By centering loan terms around quotes, Midnight aims to make term choices more market-responsive while still providing clear terms to borrowers.
Online status: cbBTC and USDC are supported on the Base chain
Midnight has been launched on the Base main network. The first version supports cbBTC and USDC, and provides loans with multiple maturities. Morpho said the release was part of a progressive promotion strategy that prioritizes security. According to a Morpho spokesperson, crypto-native lenders, borrowers and curators active on Morpho Blue have shown interest in entering the Midnight fixed-term environment. In addition, a number of companies and institutions are building beta products based on the agreement, and specific details will be announced when the product is launched.
Positioning in Morpho's overall growth and DeFi lending trends
Midnight's release comes at a time of rapid expansion for Morpho. Previously, Morpho announced that it had completed a $175 million financing and plans to expand integration with banks, asset management companies and large platforms, while adding features related to traditional credit markets, which is consistent with Midnight's fixed-rate positioning. Morpho's infrastructure has been used by several major crypto platforms for variable-rate lending. For example, Coinbase has launched Morpho-backed USDC loans for UK users, allowing borrowers to use variable interest rates to open positions on BTC, ETH and cbETH with no fixed repayment plan. This reflects the open lending model Midnight aims to complement.
In other words, Midnight extends Morpho's toolkit into the lending area that is closer to traditional financial workflows, where counterparties often value pricing and term certainty. However, the actual impact on users will depend on liquidity at specific interest rates and terms, and how quickly lenders and borrowers coordinate around these quote conditions.
It is worth paying attention to the development of Midnight's liquidity under different periods, and whether it will add more assets beyond cbBTC and USDC as the promotion progresses. The key uncertainty is whether fixed-term demand can continue to find matching offers on attractive terms-because the economic benefits of fixed-rate borrowing depend entirely on market participation.
