Sui Network officially launches the Hashi Test Network to unleash Bitcoin's native liquidity
Sui Network has officially launched the Hashi Test Network, which aims to allow native BTC to function on the Sui chain without the need for holders to bridge or encapsulate assets. The move is one of the most concrete attempts to introduce Bitcoin's huge liquidity into institutional decentralized finance.
Targeting sleeping Bitcoin capital
The scale of opportunities Hashi is targeting is huge. According to online data, only about 0.22% of the total Bitcoin supply (about US$3.07 billion) is currently deployed in the DeFi protocol. Given that Bitcoin has a market value of more than $1 trillion, supporters of Hashi believe that the gap between available capital and actual deployment cannot be ignored. Hashi was first announced in March 2026 and was mainly developed by Sui's core contributor Mysten Labs. Its core proposition is simple and clear: allowing BTC holders to lend, borrow and earn income through on-chain smart contracts without having to rely on a packaged or synthetic version of the asset. Collateral remains on the Bitcoin network, while Sui manages encryption and programmatic rights.
Guardian and Institutional Support
TestNet introduced what the team calls the Guardian Layer, a defense-in-depth security model based on the 2/2 multi-signature requirement between a Hashi verifier and an independent guardian. The structure aims to eliminate the trust assumptions that historically made institutional capital cautious about DeFi participation. The institutional lineup behind the project is extensive. Cumberland, SwissBorg and Fluid are the latest partners to join, joining existing backers such as BitGo, Blockdaemon and Ledger to bring the total number to more than 20. SwissBorg focuses on connecting its high-net-worth customer base to BTC backed lending products, while Fluid targets the institutional lending market that uses Bitcoin collateral on Sui. The testnet phase is designed to allow agencies, custodians, and DeFi teams to conduct extensive testing under real-world conditions before transferring large amounts of money to the mainnet. Sui native protocols, including Suilend, Scallop and NAVI Protocol, have said they plan to integrate Hashi once it is launched on a large scale.
The appeal for BTC holders is that they can obtain credit and income without having to sell or move Bitcoin out of their native network.
