The cruel reality of new cryptocurrencies: Only 7% of mainstream tokens exceed the offer price

A research institute tracked the performance of 113 tokens since the Token Generation Event (TGE) price, and currently only 8 tokens are priced above the offer price, with a median return of-95.7%. The sample is limited to projects with a market value of more than $100 million as of July 21.

Exceptions: Eight tokens that bucked the trend

Only 8 tokens were profitable in the survey, with HYPE, ONDO, EVA and NIGHT leading the way. As of July 21 when the report was released, Hyperliquid's HYPE was up 1519% from its offering price, Ondo Finance's ONDO was up 101.4%, and EverValue Coin (EVA) and Midnight Network (NIGHT) were up 20.3% and 16.5% respectively. These data reveal the fact that even among the rising coins, only a few achieved extraordinary performances, with six of them experiencing only double digits. It is worth noting that HYPE is also included in the newly launched S & P Pantera Digital Assets Index, which excludes many high-performing crypto assets, including Bitcoin.

What are the reasons for the decline?

Research institutions pointed out that selling pressure, insufficient liquidity and regulatory uncertainty are the main reasons for the significant pullback of these projects. Although the market has also suffered major crashes in the past two years due to hacking and other factors.

Only 7.1% of tokens launched since 2024 are still profitable. Among the 113 projects with market capitalizations of more than US$100 million, only 8 tokens traded at a price higher than their TGE price, and the remaining 105 have fallen below the issue price. This highlights how difficult it is for newly issued tokens to maintain prices.

The tokens involved in these studies cover multiple areas of the crypto industry, including DeFi, games, and various infrastructure projects. The research results came as the overall market was recovering, with Bitcoin returning above $66,000 this week due to increased ETF inflows and weaker U.S. inflation data.
