The WEMIX network was attacked and approximately 724,000 USDC.e coins were transferred.
The first-level blockchain network WEMIX said that the attacker hacked into its contract ownership related to the WEMIX$stablecoin, issued tokens without authorization, and transferred approximately 724,000 USDC.e coins.
According to preliminary event updates from WEMIX, the abnormal transaction occurred at 9:17 UTC on Sunday. The attackers issued approximately 5.23 million WEMIX$, which were subsequently exchanged for 30,736 WEMIX and 724,198.27 USDC.e. USDC.e was then bridged to Ethereum and BNB smart chains, exchanged for assets including Ether and Tether's USDT, and dispersed to multiple addresses.
WEMIX said some of the funds have been deposited on a centralized exchange. The company identified the attacker's wallet address and asked exchanges and stablecoin issuers to freeze assets and provide assistance, adding that some exchanges had frozen addresses related to the incident.
The company temporarily suspended all bridging related to its Layer 1 network WEMIX 3.0, including Chainlink CCIP and PLAY Bridge. At the same time, trading in the affected liquidity pool was suspended, liquidity provided by the foundation was withdrawn, and services such as the WEMIX$module and the PNIX decentralized exchange were suspended.
WEMIX said the cause and full impact were still under investigation and warned that preliminary data could change.
