Stability coin issuer Circle has acquired approximately 1000 patents from IBM covering blockchain infrastructure, banking, payments and insurance fields, further expanding its intellectual property layout in the digital finance field.
Circle acquired what from IBM
The stablecoin company said it purchased approximately 1000 patents from IBM, according to a press release it issued. IBM is the seller and Circle is the buyer. The patent portfolio covers four areas mentioned by the company: blockchain infrastructure, banking, payments and insurance. These categories were confirmed in an announcement issued on July 27, 2026. Circle also posted the same day's news on its official account, announcing the transaction.
Why this patent portfolio is critical to Circle
The acquisition is more like an intellectual property and infrastructure layout than a product launch. The "blockchain infrastructure" in one of the four coverage areas directly corresponds to the core systems behind Circle stablecoin operations, including the company's ongoing USDC casting activities across chains. The three categories of banking, payments and insurance suggest that the patent portfolio's coverage goes beyond the purely crypto track.
