Bitcoin (BTC) split into two competing chains on Saturday, with nodes that implemented controversial BIP-110 rules at night trailing by 18 blocks

The split in the Bitcoin chain starts at block height 961,632
Developer Jameson Lopp confirmed the divergence in an article on Saturday. Nodes running BIP-110 began rejecting any blocks that did not carry version bit 4 signals after the network reached a height of 961,632. The mining pool AntPool that won the block did not contain this signal during mining. Most network nodes successfully accepted the block. However, the BIP-110 camp did not accept it, and its nodes instead followed competing blocks produced at the same level by small mining company Roughnecks through the Ocean mining pool.
The minority chain struggled to produce a second block (height of 961,633), and then its speed plummeted, while the main chain reached a height of 961,651 on Saturday night. Iowa hosting company Simple Mining, which directs computing power to Ocean through its DATUM system, dug up blocks 961,634 on the dominant chain. Even the computing power associated with the mining pool closest to the proposal has not been synchronized.
Michael Saylor and Luke Dashjr battle over Bitcoin fork
Hours before the deadline, Michael Saylor claimed that the plan had failed to win widespread support among miners and would branch off into an irrelevant chain. Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, shares the same view. Luke Dashjr (Bitcoin Knots client developer and Ocean CTO) urged node operators to upgrade immediately, warning that older versions of the software would expose them to double spending risks.
At the same height, the difficulty of mining has also climbed to 127.48 trillion yuan. For a chain with almost no computing power, the timing is extremely unfavorable. Block time on the chain with weak computing power may be extended from the usual ten minutes to hours or even longer. Roughnecks and its allies are now addressing the same difficulty goal with a small amount of computing power needed to secure the main chain.
The Ordinals battle promotes the BIP-110 proposal
BIP-110, officially known as the "Data Reduction Temporary Soft Fork," aims to impose a one-year cap on transaction data fields that carry Ordinals inscriptions and Runes tokens. Its authors require 55% miner support (or 1109 blocks out of 2016), well below the 95% threshold typically set for past Bitcoin upgrades. Signal support has never approached this standard and has fluctuated between 0.3% and 2.6% in recent times, even though Ocean turned on the signal by default in July. Foundry, ViaBTC and F2Pool (which together with AntPool control most of the network's computing power) never sent any signals. The window will remain open to a block height of 965,664, which the network is expected to reach in about four weeks.
