Bitcoin Ordinals supporter Leonidas launches DOG Mode: An alternative open source Bitcoin client
Leonidas, an advocate of Bitcoin Ordinals, has launched DOG Mode, an open source Bitcoin client alternative that changes the way nodes relay certain valid transactions, but does not change Bitcoin's consensus rules.

DOG Mode is for relay policies, not Bitcoin consensus
DOG Mode increases the maximum single transaction size allowed under its relay policies to 3.9 million weight units. Bitcoin Core's default strategy currently limits a single standard transaction to 400,000 weight units. The client will also reduce the dust threshold to 1 Cong for small transaction output.
According to reports, DOG Mode does not require Bitcoin fork because it operates within existing consensus rules. Nodes can choose to run the software and relay transactions that other clients may regard as non-standard, while miners still decide for themselves which valid transactions to include in blocks.
Ordinals and Runes return to governance debate
The proposal focuses on a long-standing controversy: whether Bitcoin should treat every valid and fee-paying transaction equally. Leonidas supports a market-based model where users compete for block space through fees, rather than software developers deciding which transaction structures should receive default relay support. DOG Mode may make it easier to spread large Ordinals inscriptions and small outputs used by certain bitcoin-native token protocols. However, different relay strategies may also cause nodes to have different views on unconfirmed transactions before miners add them to the block. Even if there are differences in node memory pools, Bitcoin's consensus rules will remain unchanged.
DOG Mode takes a different path from BIP 110
DOG Mode's approach contrasts with BIP 110, which proposes temporary consensus limits on several forms of transaction data. Bitcoin developer Luke Dashjr reportedly continues to support the proposal, despite objections from users who believe the restrictions are censorship. Proponents of BIP 110 believe that transactions with large amounts of data will increase storage costs and consume scarce block space. Critics argue that changing consensus rules to restrict currently valid transactions could set a broader precedent.
Michael Saylor and Adam Back reportedly opposed BIP 110, while Miner Signal was still well below its proposed 55% activation threshold in mid-July.
Bitcoin users decide which strategies to adopt
DOG Mode also raises questions about how Bitcoin governance can operate outside formal protocol changes. Bitcoin Core developers can set default relay policies, but node operators can still run other software freely. Miners can also receive transactions through direct channels rather than a public point-to-point relay network. This difference means that DOG Mode does not require broad consensus to start running. Its impact will depend on whether node operators, miners and Bitcoin users choose to adopt its strategy. Leonidas said the long-term goal is for wider use to push existing Bitcoin clients to rethink restrictions he believes are unnecessary.
The controversy now presents two different approaches to Bitcoin's controversial activities. BIP 110 seeks new consensus limits, while DOG Mode removes some default policy limits without changing consensus. The final result will depend on which software users choose to run and which transactions miners choose to process.
