Ethereum's ETH tokens are undergoing a shift in use, from exchange-based speculation to on-chain activities. Whale hoarding is linked to expanding global demand, while exchange reserves are still shrinking. Ethereum is showing a shift in demand for ETH, from trading and speculation in the U.S. to growing global demand and on-chain use. A sign of declining U.S. demand is the Coinbase Premium Index, which will be negative for most of 2026. ETH's open interest was also almost flat at $11.37 billion, indicating weak demand for speculative trading.
ETH's premium on Coinbase will remain negative for most of 2026, indicating weakening U.S. demand and increasing global hoarding of currency placement.
ETH is still hovering around $1900, and has recently fallen back to $1,889.80. Although ETH showed no obvious signs of rebound, it still recorded an increase of 18.5% in July, setting its best monthly performance of the year. The token shows growing demand for on-chain activity as DeFi lending is showing signs of recovery. ETH remains one of the strongest collateral in the DeFi agreement, retaining liquidity in the ecosystem. As a result, ETH demand and withdrawals result in a premium for Binance compared to Coinbase. Demand for ETH from U.S. institutions will slow down in the summer of 2026 due to lower demand from digital vault companies. However, global projects are still obtaining and withdrawing ETH from Binance, while promoting pledges and other on-chain activities.
Demand and activity on the ETH chain are rising
In the second quarter of 2026, Ethereum's deployment of new contracts increased. More than 500,000 new contracts were deployed in the last week of July. One of the main reasons for the increase in activity is Ethereum's extremely low Gas fees, which makes on-chain activities feasible again. According to Token Terminal data, the number of contract deployers also increased to 14,900 at the end of July. The busiest category is DeFi contracts based on ETH destruction. As of August 3, SeaDrop NFT contracts were also one of the busiest. Unnamed contracts and new projects are also accelerating.
Ethereum has seen a new inflow of smart contracts in the past month.
Ethereum remains the settlement layer for tokens, tokenized securities, encapsulated bitcoins and other assets. L2 activity has also slowed down, and stablecoins are returning to Ethereum. The on-chain Ethereum event shows an attempt to revitalize decentralized encryption opportunities. Retail traders are still looking for these opportunities and are not at the mercy of giant whales or market makers. Currently, the recovery is relatively small, but this suggests that crypto activity can still return to a liquid place. The most active tokens on Ethereum include DAI, SHIB, CRO, PAX Gold and ONDO, as well as the stablecoin USDT. These activities include both traditional uses and a new shift to tokenized real-world assets (RWA).
Giant whale buys ETH, but remains cautious
ETH shows a need to hoard, pledge and transfer tokens from exchanges. At the same time, giant whales are still more bearish than retail traders.
ETH whales are still more bearish than retail traders, but in the past month, some strategic whales have been accumulating more tokens.
Despite this, giant whales have shown signs of accumulating ETH in the past month. A giant whale extracted 112,000 ETH pieces and began sending them to pledged beacon chain contracts. In addition, Bitmine pledged 150,120 ETH items and currently locks in more than 87% of its treasury holdings. The Ethereum validator exit queue is almost empty, with only 6.6 ETH waiting to be withdrawn. More than 2.4 million ETH are waiting to be pledged and are beginning to receive rewards.
