Solana memin "$ONLYMARMS" raises more than US$14,000 for groundhog research projects.
A Solana memin called "$ONLYMARMS" has successfully raised considerable funds for the research team behind it-something they had previously failed to do on the OnlyFans platform. The token, launched by the community on the Pumpfun platform, has raised more than $14,000 for a 64-year-old groundhog research project. According to the laboratory's own fundraising tracker, that figure exceeds the approximately $6000 raised on the project's own OnlyFans page.
Six-year research project faces financial difficulties
"Groundhog Adaptive Dynamics"(M.A.D.) at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory near Cresttebit, Colorado The laboratory, which has been tracking yellow-bellied woodchuck since 1962, is one of the longest running wildlife research projects in the world. It is also the second oldest research project of its kind in the world, behind Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research.
Daniel Broomstein, an ecology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, is the project leader. He told National Public Radio (NPR) that their teaching assistant positions had been cut due to the rejection of a grant application from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Since Trump took office for the second time, his administration has frozen or cut more than $700 million in NSF grants. After three renewal applications failed, NSF told Bloomstein not to submit any more applications.
Broomstein and his team then created an OnlyFans page called "OnlyMarms" where fans can view daily photos and videos of wild groundhogs and support the ongoing research with rewards. "The content will be for all ages, and we will not sexize it in any way," Bloomstein told the New York Times. Julian Martin, a professor at the University of Ottawa who co-led the research, later joined the fundraising effort and personally registered on the Pumpfun platform to transfer the token's creator fees to the laboratory.
Cryptocurrency fundraising outperforms content platform
The community's launch of the "OnlyMarms" token on the Pumpfun platform is one of the more successful attempts. Pumpfun is a platform that allows anyone to quickly create Solana-based tokens. The laboratory's "Marmot Project" Instagram account showed that donations on the platform totaled more than $6000 after OnlyFans deducted a 20% share. Pumpfun tokens currently receive more than twice that number in cryptocurrency donations. As of writing, the $ONLYMARMS token has risen 600% in the past 24 hours, reaching a market value of $2.75 million.
Other fundraising activities for the Groundhog Project include the "Marmot Tears IPA" beer brewed by Irwin Brewing Co. of Crest-Debit in early July, and the "Fat Groundhog Week" event inspired by the "Fat Bear Week" in Katmai National Park, which will be held in August. Bloomstein said the laboratory is also continuing to apply for traditional research grants.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to the overall funding crunch facing the U.S. scientific community. In 2025, the Trump administration canceled more than 1700 NSF grants, totaling approximately US$1.4 billion; and entering 2026, the agency has issued so far only a fraction of the US$9 billion it has typically issued in recent years. The White House also proposes to cut the budget in nearly half for fiscal year 2027.
