Upbit was removed from BONK due to unresolved security and information disclosure issues
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Upbit determined after evaluation that the Bonk Inu (BONK) project no longer meets its digital asset listing requirements, so it decided to remove it. The decision was made after several weeks of compliance review that covered the project's security measures, governance standards and information disclosure practices under South Korea's regulatory framework.
BONK's trading support will end at 15:00 (Korean Standard Time) on September 7, 2026, when Upbit will automatically cancel all pending buy and sell orders. Users can withdraw assets they hold before October 7, 2026.
Upbit said trading activity and price performance did not affect its decision. The exchange noted that despite the additional review period, a number of compliance issues remained unresolved, so it removed BONK from the platform.
In early July this year, the token was included in Upbit's trading caution category because the exchange discovered some issues that required further evaluation. Since then, Upbit has been reviewing whether the project has resolved these legacy issues.
Upbit points out that despite extended review, risks remain
Upbit explained that its review found unresolved security risks in wallets or blockchain infrastructure that support BONK, and that the root cause of these incidents has not yet been fully identified or completely resolved. Upbit also criticized the project's handling of material disclosures, noting that important information failed to be communicated in a timely manner through appropriate disclosure channels, and determined that BONK no longer met the transparency standards required for listing digital assets.
After the review, Upbit believed that the issues found remained unresolved, so it decided to terminate transaction support in accordance with its digital asset removal policy rather than extend the monitoring period.
Upbit recommends that investors holding BONK withdraw their tokens before the withdrawal deadline; otherwise, users may have difficulty accessing these assets through the exchange once support officially ends.
As regulators push to strengthen investor protection and improve market transparency, the Korea Cryptocurrency Exchange has strengthened its listing standards, focusing more on governance structures, security controls and timely information disclosure when evaluating listing projects.
Projects seeking to remain listed must demonstrate effective operational management capabilities, maintain clear communication with investors, respond promptly to major events affecting their networks or users, and meet technical requirements.
Removal affects Upbit users, but the global market will not be affected
Upbit's decision applies only to its own platform and does not hinder BONK's trading on international cryptocurrency exchanges. However, the move is another example of South Korea's exchanges enforcing stricter compliance standards as regulatory expectations evolve.
BONK was removed from Upbit, highlighting the growing importance of security, governance and transparent disclosure for digital asset projects operating in South Korea. Although the token can still be traded on other exchanges, Upbit's decision shows that meeting regulatory and compliance expectations has become as important as maintaining market activity.
