Dogcoin contributors issue important wallet security warnings to holders
Dogcoin community contributor Mishaboar called on DOGE holders to rethink wallet security and avoid storing long-term savings in software wallets. His warning highlighted how different wallet designs protect private keys and the risks users may encounter when choosing a cryptocurrency storage method.
According to Mishaboar, reliable hardware wallets keep seeds and private keys in dedicated components that are isolated from the Internet connection environment. Software wallets run on smartphones or computers, placing sensitive information in devices exposed to applications, network connections and operating systems.
His comments also addressed security issues highlighted by the Coldcard vulnerability, which stems from a vulnerability that affects wallet seed generation. Galaxy Research estimates that attackers stole approximately 1,719 bitcoins worth approximately $111 million, making it the third-largest cryptocurrency hack in 2026.
Researchers estimate that the damage could be as high as $130 million because investigators have not yet identified all potentially damaged wallets. It is reported that a firmware vulnerability that has existed since March 2021 has reduced the seed randomness of some Coldcard wallets from 128 bits to about 40 bits.
As a result, an attacker may violently crack the seeds of the vulnerability without touching the affected hardware device. The theft of wallet funds reportedly began on July 30, demonstrating how implementation-level weaknesses undermine security protections designed for cryptocurrency holders.
Mishaboar highlights risks behind software wallets
According to Mishaboar, smartphones can contain security hardware that protects sensitive information from system-level access. However, it is difficult for users to determine whether individual wallet developers are using these security features correctly when building applications.
In addition, the security of software wallets depends largely on how developers handle private keys, seed generation, backup, update and recovery processes. Mishaboar lists seed generation errors, information leaks, malicious updates, unsafe backups, backdoors, and abnormal derivation paths as potential vulnerabilities.
Despite these concerns, smartphone wallets can still play a role in cryptocurrency payments, transactions, smart contracts, and relatively small-scale holdings. Mishaboar believes users should view it as a hot wallet rather than a solution for storing large amounts of long-term savings.
Hardware wallets also need to be carefully evaluated, as dedicated devices may still contain firmware or implementation-level vulnerabilities. Therefore, separating the private key from the connected device can reduce some risks, but cannot guarantee complete protection against all security failures.
For DOGE holders, Mishaboar's warning emphasizes choosing storage methods based on the intended use and understanding how wallets protect sensitive information. Long-term cryptocurrency storage requires stronger security measures than funds used for daily payments, transactions, or interactions with blockchain applications.
