SpaceX's first earnings report after listing was announced, and investors 'questions and answers were flooded by memin.
Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX, Nasdaq: SPCX) will go public on June 12, 2026, with an offering price of US$135 per share, making it the largest initial public offering in history. On its first day of trading, the share price soared to $225.64 before eventually closing at $184.
Less than two months later, Elon Musk's space company released its first quarterly earnings report since going public. On August 4, SpaceX reported second-quarter revenue of US$7.81 billion, a year-on-year increase of 92%, and net loss narrowed from approximately US$1 billion to US$541 million. Adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) jumped 191% to $3.5 billion.
The earnings conference call focuses mainly on Starlink, Starship and SpaceX's expanding artificial intelligence businesses. Management pointed out that the company has a backlog of orders of US$47.5 billion and holds a total of US$100 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities.
However, the public investor Q & A session held to accompany SpaceX's first earnings cycle attracted a completely different audience-memo enthusiasts.
SpaceX Investor Q & A Encountered with Memo Questions
SpaceX allows investors to submit questions and vote for management to respond. But the page was quickly inundated with posts promoting "Baby Asteroid" and "Asteroid Shiba"-memes trying to associate themselves with SpaceX's "asteroid" mascots. Memin is a type of cryptocurrency inspired by Internet memes, jokes or cultural trends, often driven by online communities and speculation rather than practical use.
One of the popular questions that received about 1100 likes read: "Baby Asteroid has made an impact through global charity activities," and then asked if SpaceX could expand its role. Another question, which received 338 votes, called the "asteroid" SpaceX's "official mascot" and asked about its future plans. Some questions were more straightforward. Someone directly asked Musk when he announced that "Asteroid Shiba is the mascot of SpaceX" and urged him to support the Ethereum-based memo.
This swipe finally prompted another participant to ask: "Can we add a 'step' feature to the Q & A? There are now many coin circle players promoting asteroid mascot coins in questions, rather than real investor questions."
For an aerospace company, SpaceX has an extremely strong connection with cryptocurrency. The company holds 18712 bitcoins (approximately US$1.1 billion), which is the eighth largest number of bitcoins held by companies, according to bitcoin treasury bonds. Although the value of its holdings shrank by approximately $539 million in the first half of 2026, the company did not sell any bitcoins during the quarter.
As of writing, SpaceX shares were trading at $133.19, up slightly 0.06% on the day, but still down about 11.3% from their all-time high.
