Mark Cuban once said Bitcoin is more valuable than gold, but now sells most of his positions

Mark Cuban is not the type to quietly retract his stance. Therefore, when he sold most of his Bitcoin in May 2026 and called it "disappointing," this statement was completely different from the common pessimism of cryptocurrencies.

He once truly believed in this, and he publicly stated his position many times, with words and deeds, and with real investment. "People see Bitcoin as an upgraded version of gold, and I agree," he said in an interview last year."It's easier to buy and sell, you can split it up, you can buy things, you can transfer money internationally. So I think it is more valuable than gold."

His reasons are pragmatic. Gold bars are heavy, easy to steal, and difficult to exchange for goods and services. In his view, Bitcoin solves all three problems at the same time. At the time, his cryptocurrency portfolio also reflected this belief: 60% Bitcoin, 30% Ethereum, 10% other assets.

What the Iran crisis changed

Eighteen months later, Cuban sold most of the Bitcoin. The reason is not a change in philosophy, but a data point that he cannot refute.

In early 2026, when military tensions between the United States and Iran escalated, Cuban expected Bitcoin to do what he had always described: it would rise when the world panicked and the dollar weakened. Gold hit a record high of $5589 per ounce on January 28, weeks before the conflict broke out, due to war fears in Iran, the Federal Reserve maintained interest rates, and the weakening of the US dollar. Bitcoin fell immediately after the attack. "Gold soared, but Bitcoin fell," Cuban said in a May 2026 podcast."Every time the dollar fell, Bitcoin should have risen, but it just didn't."

Assets he once called a "golden upgrade" failed the test he deliberately designed.

His current stance

Cuban now describes Bitcoin as "disappointing" and calls it "lost direction." He remains more positive about Ethereum, believing that smart contracts, decentralized finance (DeFi) and real-world applications are the reasons why the second largest cryptocurrency still has a future. As for all other cryptocurrencies-memes, tokens, and altcoins-his evaluation is: "garbage."

On August 12, 2026, the trading price of Bitcoin was approximately US$63495, down 49% from the historical high of US$126000. Gold is trading at approximately $4424 an ounce. Cuban called Bitcoin an upgraded version of gold in January 2025, and since then, gold's performance has exceeded Bitcoin by nearly 100 percentage points. He saw it all earlier than most, but was just in the wrong direction.
