How a wallet becomes a memin magnet
Binance co-founder Zhao Changpeng (@cz_binance) said that due to the continuous influx of junk memin, daily account management is almost impossible, and he will stop using one of his public wallets. The statement was released on August 16. Zhao Changpeng said that he was initially testing Trust Wallet, but because he had accumulated too many useless tokens in the address, it was difficult to locate his BNB balance.
What follows reveals the unique challenges faced by prominent people in the cryptocurrency field. Every attempt to clean up tokens attracts a new round of attention, as each destruction transaction attracts traders and community members. As Zhao Changpeng himself admitted, the situation became counterproductive: the more tokens he destroyed, the more memes people sent to that address.
A cleanup attempt in July made this dynamic particularly clear. Blockchain analysis platform Lookonchain noticed that Zhao Changpeng destroyed 4,444 tokens each from two third-party projects at his BNB chain address. Speculators immediately interpreted this as a hidden signal on the chain. The market value of one of the barely unknown tokens soared from about US$40,000 to US$30 million, an increase of more than 30,000%, while the genuine version of the token traded on Binance Alpha showed no fluctuations.
BNB and Binance Life will donate to Giggle College
Zhao Changpeng announced that he would donate all BNB and BinanceLife tokens held in his wallet to Giggle Academy, the free education nonprofit organization he founded, and would then stop all activities at the address, essentially converting it to a destruction address. In the future, any tokens sent to this address will be permanently locked and cannot be withdrawn. According to reports, the total value of the donation is approximately $960,000.
Giggle Academy aims to provide free educational resources to children around the world, focusing on communities that lack quality educational opportunities. The platform has reached more than 1 million students around the world. Zhao Changpeng also earmarked all royalties from his 2026 memoir "Freedom of Money" for the program.
This incident highlights the structural conflicts in the cryptocurrency space. Traditional financial accounts do not disclose every recorded transaction, but blockchain wallets are different. Anyone can view public addresses and track transactions on networks such as the BNB chain-this transparency is one of the core features of cryptocurrencies, but can also pose practical challenges for public figures.
After Zhao Changpeng announced that he would give up the address, the skyrocketing counterfeit token chart immediately reacted, and a wave of panic selling brought its market value back to US$5.26 million.
