South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit reached 1.15 trillion won in a single hour
On Saturday, South Korea's largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit recorded a trading volume of approximately 1.15 trillion won (approximately US$830 million) in one hour. XRP and TRUMP meme coins dominated the current round of active markets.
Prior to this surge, Upbit's daily trading volume surged 273% on August 21 to approximately US$1.84 billion, the highest level since mid-March. By Saturday, total 24-hour trading volume climbed further to about $3.81 billion.
This rebound marks a significant return to speculation in one of the world's most active retail crypto markets after months of sluggish trading.
XRP accounts for nearly one-third of Upbit's trading volume.
According to the Upbit data platform, XRP accounts for 32.20% of Upbit's 24-hour trading volume, far ahead of all other assets on the exchange. TRUMP ranked second with 10.93%, and USDT ranked third with 8.39%. Ethereum and Bitcoin accounted for 5.44% and 5.40% respectively.
XRP's dominance coincides with its overall strong recovery. Previously, XRP had risen by about 35% in seven days due to Ripple CEO Brad Garinhaus's involvement in recent White House discussions on cryptocurrency legislation. Increased activity in derivatives trading and hoarding in whale accounts also provided support for XRP's rise.
Institutional demand has also increased. Recent data shows that XRP has experienced unusually strong capital inflows relative to the size of its exchange-traded fund market.
South Korean cryptocurrency traders return after being silent in the first half of the year.
Before trading volume surged, South Korean investors generally turned to the domestic stock market in the first half of 2026. Artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks pushed the South Korean Composite Stock Price Index higher, and the market performance was flat. During this period, operating revenue for Upbit and its competitor Bithumb both fell by nearly 50%.
This trend is now reversing. On August 21, Bithumb's daily trading volume increased 132.9% to approximately $934.9 million, compared with its latest 24-hour trading volume of approximately $1.95 billion. Coinone also recorded transaction volume of $172 million.
XRP has historically attracted high attention among retail traders in South Korea, and its fast settlement design and payment function remain its core values. TRUMP added another speculative color to the rise. The token rose about 26% in 24 hours, after gaining more than 66% in the previous week and trading at about $2.34, after hitting a historical low of $1.37 on August 13.
It is uncertain whether this rise will develop into a continued return to South Korean cryptocurrency liquidity. But the size of Upbit's deal suggests retail risk appetite has rapidly rebounded, and XRP now accounts for the lion's share of this renewed demand.
