Japanese financial giant SBI Holdings acquired Singapore cryptocurrency exchange Coinhako, receiving 1.11 trillion SHIBs

SBI Holdings, one of Japan's largest financial services groups, has acquired a majority stake in Singapore-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinhako. The transaction was completed after receiving final regulatory approval from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), and SBI Holdings inherited a huge number of 1.11 trillion Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens.

Coinhako: Rising with compliance licenses

Coinhako was founded by Singapore entrepreneurs in 2014 and has grown into Southeast Asia's leading digital asset service provider. After receiving MAS approval in principle in 2021, Coinhako officially obtained a full major payment institution license in May 2022. The license allows it to provide regulated digital payment token services, making it one of the first fully licensed cryptocurrency exchanges in Singapore's highly regulated financial environment.

Coinhako's regulatory achievements have made it a trusted player in the region's competitive cryptocurrency industry and paved the way for mergers with large overseas institutions such as SBI Holdings.

Shiba Inu's influence continues to expand

Shiba Inu (SHIB) was created in August 2020 by an anonymous founder named "Ryoshi". It is an ERC-20 token on the Ethereum blockchain, with a maximum supply of 1000 trillion coins. The project was initially launched as a fun alternative to dogcoin, but quickly attracted widespread attention with its community-driven concept and a sharp increase in prices. Its ecosystem has since expanded and now includes decentralized finance (DeFi) projects and digital collectibles.

Ryoshi initially sent half of the total supply of SHIB to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who subsequently destroyed a large portion of it and donated another large portion to charity. These high-profile moves have helped SHIB consolidate its position as the world's leading memecoin.

(Note: Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an ERC-20 token issued on the Ethereum blockchain. As a "memecoin", it is popular around the world with its viral community, extremely low unit price and meme-style brand image. Its ecosystem includes DeFi apps and NFT, and is actively traded on major exchanges.)

SBI Holdings unexpectedly entered SHIB

SBI Holdings did not intend to invest in SHIB. The huge amount of tokens it held were incidental to the acquisition of Coinhako assets (including customer balances and exchange platform inventory). This allowed a large Japanese financial institution to enter the memecoin space, an area that is often ignored by more conservative market participants.

Data shows that SHIB's net inflow to exchanges has increased recently as deposits have exceeded withdrawals. This trend is sometimes interpreted as potential selling pressure, but large transfers on the chain can also signal liquidity operations or internal asset deployments by exchanges.

Critical Event Schedule

May 2022: Coinhako obtained the license of a major payment institution and was allowed to fully operate a regulated digital token business in Singapore.

2024: SBI Holdings acquired Coinhako and inherited 1.11 trillion SHIBs as part of an asset transfer.

Although SHIB is highly liquid and active users, it has not yet been included in typical institutional investment vehicles such as U.S. listed cryptocurrency ETFs. There is still an ongoing debate on the role and acceptance of memein for the portfolios served by actively managed funds.

Institutional impact on SHIB

SBI Holdings 'intervention has introduced a regulated and important stakeholder from Asia into the SHIB ecosystem. The impact of this development on SHIB demand will depend on future trading activity and investor sentiment, especially as exchange inflows tend to distribute rather than accumulate.

For SHIB holders, the SBI acquisition marks that a large Asian financial group with vast infrastructure has become a new player in the industry. The long-term significance of this position may depend on the evolution of regulatory attitudes and continued community engagement.

SBI Holdings is headquartered in Tokyo and has businesses covering a wide range of financial services such as securities, banking, asset management and now digital assets. Its foray into the cryptocurrency field further demonstrates that the region, especially in the traditional financial circles, is paying increasing attention to digital finance.
