On TV and Internet shows with an average rating of 4.1 million, a well-known comedian and political commentator ruthlessly exposed Trump's connection with digital assets. Oliver portrayed cryptocurrency as the Trump family's main business focus, with its scale surpassing real estate.
Although Trump initially called Bitcoin a scam and described cryptocurrencies as a "disaster that will happen sooner or later," he has now reshaped himself as "the first cryptocurrency president." His recent financial filing shows that his personal income in his first year back to the White House exceeded $2.2 billion, of which $1.2 billion came from cryptocurrencies. The president and first lady each launched their own meme coins, which have both plunged 92% and 99% respectively from early highs. It is estimated that approximately 1 million retail traders have lost a cumulative amount of US$3.8 billion while trading $TRUMP coins. Oliver suggested that in some cases, the president provided access to the White House in exchange for investing in meme coins.
"The greatest degree of suspicion": The grey area of free finance in the world
The show's host criticized what he believed was suspicious transactions carried out under cover by Trump's World Free Finance venture capital firm. Among them, Sun Yuchen of Wave Field TRON made a $45 million investment before the company faced a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission fraud settlement. The case was subsequently dropped without admitting any fault and a settlement was reached for $10 million. Amanda Fisher, former SEC chief of staff, described it as a "sweetheart deal." Oliver also pointed out that the United Arab Emirates royal family reached a deal with World Free Finance that made Trump a personal net profit of US$263 million, and shortly thereafter, the United States 'restrictions on the United Arab Emirates's access to advanced Nvidia AI chips were lifted. The comedian described cryptocurrency as the "perfect tool" for channelling money to the Trump family, echoing ethics lawyer Virginia Cantor's views on the matter, adding that Trump was "exploiting the dubious nature of cryptocurrency to maximize profits."
Oliver's Position on Cryptocurrency Regulation
A key aspect of the show was the discussion of the CLARITY Act, a hotly discussed regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. Oliver described the bill as transferring regulatory oversight and power from the SEC to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), which he called "a small federal agency with little enforcement powers." The proposed regulatory regulation has been praised by many in the cryptocurrency industry. However,"Last Week Tonight Show" pointed out that the introduction of a new asset class-digital commodities-gives the CFTC exclusive jurisdiction over the spot and cash markets for these assets, which could weaken regulatory powers that could otherwise resist government corruption. The show host also suggested that the ambiguous nature of the Trump family's cryptocurrency transactions would benefit the president. "If these conflicts of interest are as easy to understand as Jimmy Carter and his peanut farm, I think people will be even more shocked by the blatant corruption and compromise Trump has shown here," Oliver said. In his view, the American public is indifferent to possible cryptocurrency corruption by the current president simply because it is difficult for laymen to understand, prompting him to emphasize the need for "appropriate guardrails." Currently, the CLARITY bill has not yet become law, and its probability of passing this year in the forecast market has recently dropped to only 31%.
