SecondFi once again calls on hackers to return stolen assets and launch a compensation plan.
The SecondFi team, a cryptocurrency wallet platform focused on the Cardano ecosystem, once again issued an appeal to hackers who hacked into its systems in June. The developers confirmed that the originally proposed reward plan is still in effect and are willing to provide rewards in exchange for the return of all stolen assets.
Official Statement and Recovery Work
SecondFi spoke directly to the attacker in an official statement, urging them to communicate through designated channels. The company emphasizes that voluntary return of stolen funds is the fastest way to resolve problems for all parties involved.
SecondFi reiterated its existing proposal, calling on responsible parties to communicate through official channels, and pointed out that voluntary action is the most direct way for all parties to deal with it.
SecondFi, together with the Cardano Foundation and the Input Output Group, realized that there was little chance of a response from a suspected attacker (some believed to be the Lazarus Group). To this end, the three organizations have launched a three-phase compensation plan for affected users.
Compensation Schedule and User Guide
Compensation plans include several key phases. Currently, the team is collecting, verifying and processing claims from victims of the intrusion. This process will last until the end of July. By mid-August 2026, SecondFi plans to launch tools that will allow users to securely export remaining assets to external platforms. Users are advised to consider transferring assets to hardware wallets to enhance security.
The next step is planned for early September 2026, when an automated compensation portal based on zero-knowledge proof will be launched. The portal is designed to simplify the reimbursement process by verifying user claims and protecting sensitive data.
Micro Dictionary: Zero-knowledge proof is a cryptographic method that allows one party to prove to another that a statement is true without revealing any specific details. This technology is widely used in blockchain applications to enhance privacy and security.
Compensation Phase
Phase: Claim processing; Date: end of July 2026; Action: Collect and verify user claims.
Phase: Asset Export Tool; Date: mid-August 2026; Action: Safely export assets to third-party platforms.
Phase: Automatic compensation; Date: early September 2026; Action: Launch zero-knowledge proof-based portal.
Incident Background
The security incident occurred between June 21 and 23, 2026. The attacker compromised the SecondFi platform (previously operated by blockchain infrastructure company EMURGO and called Yoroi Wallet), damaging 374 individual wallets. The hack stole 16.1 million Cardano (ADA) tokens, valued at approximately $2.4 million to $2.6 million at the time.
SecondFi technical team responded quickly and successfully protected another 129 million ADAs and transferred them to an independent custodian, avoiding further losses.
EMURGO Decision and Subsequent Impact
Given the far-reaching financial and reputational implications of this intrusion, EMURGO leadership made a decisive decision. The company announced the complete decommissioning and liquidation of the SecondFi and Yoroi brands on the grounds that continued service provision was no longer feasible.
This marks the end of SecondFi, with the focus now fully on compensating affected users and securing their assets.
