CZ and Meme founder dispute over Giggle donation rules

Token sales controversy

There has been a public disagreement between Zhao Changpeng (CZ), founder of free education platform Giggle Academy, and Brian Sumner, developer of memecoin, over how charities handle donated tokens.

As the driving force behind Mame and Koma memecoin, Sumner said he sent 2% of its token supply (worth approximately $165,000) to Giggle Academy's wallet and expected the tokens to be sold. His objection was not about the sale itself, but about the way it was sold. He recommended that charities liquidate donations in small batches rather than selling them all at once, and believed that large sales would cause unnecessary disruption to the market.

CZ refuted this, saying that Giggle Academy is not a cryptocurrency trading team and does not have enough infrastructure or expertise to manage the token supply with such precision. He pointed out that project parties whose donations are sufficient to influence the market should not expect recipients to handle the disposal of these tokens perfectly. CZ confirmed that Giggle Academy will exchange most of its donated tokens for BNB at the end of each month to maintain operations. He said the platform intends to keep the process simple and will continue to sell most of the tokens it receives on a monthly basis.

A charity built on crypto donations

Giggle Academy has been handling the growing number of unsolicited memecoin donations. The agency's position is clear: it sells donated tokens to maintain operations, does not own any tokens itself, and has no plans to issue any.

CZ said the proceeds from the token sales were used to support Giggle Academy's educational mission, which he claimed had reached more than one million children in less than two years. All donations are traceable on the chain and no funds are used to pay salaries or infrastructure, which are borne by CZ personally.

Some critics believe that selling memecoin immediately for donations could hinder future donations by increasing selling pressure. The controversy has also sparked broader discussions about CZ's influence on the memecoin market. Sumner himself said he had no complaints about the sale of his donations, but only regarded his advice as a practical opinion rather than a dissatisfaction.

The debate highlights an increasingly common tension as crypto charities attract more speculative large donations. There is no simple answer to the question of timing and method of how to properly dispose of highly volatile assets without causing harm to the donor community.
