An affiliate of the Political Action Committee (PAC), largely funded by donations from cryptocurrency companies Ripple Labs and Coinbase, has invested more money in advertising for next week's Michigan's 13th Congressional District primary.
According to Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings as of Thursday, the Protect Progress PAC has spent a total of more than $2 million on media campaigns to support Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan's 13th District and oppose its Democratic challenger Donavan McKinney. The latest documents show that the PAC's spending actually doubled from the figures reported a week ago, adding an additional $884,240 to pro-Thanedar ads and more than $150,000 to anti-McKinney ads.

During his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives, Thanedar voted in support of GENIUS legislation focusing on stablecoins, and the crypto market structure bill currently under consideration in the Senate, the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act. He also co-sponsored the Innovation Promotion of Blockchain Development Act to protect developers.
In a July 21 statement about PAC spending in support of Thanedar, McKinney said: "The crypto lobby is rewarding my opponent for helping Trump earn more than $1 billion after he took office." He may be referring to the U.S. president's disclosure that he made more than $1.4 billion from cryptocurrency investments in 2025, including gains from his memin Official Trump (TRUMP) and through his family business World Liberty Financial. Many Democrats accuse Trump of using his position to profit from the presidency through laws such as GENIUS.
Thanedar and McKinney's campaigns were contacted for comment on PAC spending, but no immediate response was received.
Protect Progress is a subsidiary of Fairshake PAC. Fairshake PAC spent more than $170 million in the 2024 U.S. election cycle through the media to support candidates it believes will benefit the crypto industry policies. The Michigan primary is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, but the PAC and its affiliates have poured millions of dollars into 2026 races in Texas, Illinois and other states.
U.S. consumer advocacy group Public Citizen reported in June that Fairshake and its affiliates spent more than $82 million of the approximately $189 million that cryptocurrency companies spent for the 2026 election cycle. As of January, Fairshake reported holding $193 million in funding reserves.
PAC spending in Washington and Alabama, primaries approaching
In addition to the Michigan primary, Fairshake affiliate Defend American Jobs PAC spent more than $65,000 on media publicity to support a Republican running in Washington State's 4th Congressional District, according to FEC documents. Washington state is scheduled to hold its primary election on the same day as Michigan.
Alabama is scheduled to hold its primary election on August 11 and is also a focus for Fairshake. FEC documents show Defend American Jobs spent more than 0 on media promotion to support Jerry Carl Jr., He is a Republican who represented the state's 1st Congressional District from 2021 to 2025. Notably, the former Alabama congressman is one of the wealthiest members of the state's House delegation, with a reported net worth of $15 million in 2023.
