Hashdex announced that it will liquidate its eponymous spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) this month, distribute cash to all remaining shareholders and sell approximately 225 bitcoins held by the fund.

The fund's issuer said in a filing Monday that the decision was made after assessing factors such as trading liquidity, operating costs and investor interest. As of liquidation, the fund had a total of 200,000 shares and has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange Arca since March 2024, with the trading code DEFI and a net asset size of US$14.25 million.

Among the 10 Bitcoin ETFs of the same type, Hashdex's ETF entered the market late, and the first product has been listed several months ahead of schedule. At that time, the price of Bitcoin exceeded an all-time high of more than $73,000, and analysts believed that there was still a chance at this time.

"The current market is very favorable. Although it entered late, if the rates are competitive, this fund may still attract some funds." Eric Balchunas, senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg, commented on March 27, 2024.

The Hashdex Bitcoin Futures ETF was originally launched as a Bitcoin futures ETF in 2022, with an asset size of up to US$17.54 million, reaching a peak on May 9, 2025. Among the U.S. traded bitcoin ETFs, the second-largest is the WisdomTree Bitcoin Trust (BTCW), with net assets of $140.37 million at the close of last Friday.
