XRP Price Comparison
Current price: US$1.03, change of-1.7% on the day; price one month ago: US$1.11, change of-7.4%; price one year ago: approximately US$3.28, change of-68.6%. On August 7, the XRP trading range ranged from $1.015 to $1.041, near the bottom of its 52-week low of $1.0095 to a high of $3.3818.
What is XRP?
XRP is the native cryptocurrency of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain designed to achieve fast, low-cost transaction settlement. The XRP ledger was developed by Jade McKaleb, Arthur Britto and David Schwartz in 2011 and 2012. All 100 billion XRPs were generated at the time of creation, rather than through mining.
Ripple, a financial technology company closely associated with the ecosystem, received 80 billion XRPs in 2012 to support development and liquidity. Subsequently, Ripple deposited 55 billion XRPs into escrow accounts in 2017, thereby developing a predictable position release plan.
XRP Price History
In the past year, XRP has experienced severe price fluctuations. Its 52-week trading range extended from approximately $1.01 to $3.38. In the month ending August 7, the token hit a high of $1.1642, before falling back to around $1.03. In the seven days ending Friday, XRP fell approximately 5.5%, becoming one of the weakest performing major cryptocurrencies over the same period.
The decline comes as the U.S. Senate postponed consideration of cryptocurrency market structure legislation, known as the CLARITY Act, until at least September.
Factors influencing the price of XRP
A variety of factors may affect the price of XRP, including investor sentiment, regulatory dynamics, institutional demand, and the level of activity on the XRP books. Ripple's XRP is also one of the factors that have attracted much attention. The company unlocked 1 billion XRPs per month as planned on August 1, but Ripple has historically re-deposited most of the tokens it releases each month into escrow accounts rather than putting them all into circulation.
Institutional demand has also weakened recently. Weekly inflows into XRP exchange-traded funds reportedly fell to approximately US$1 million from US$14.9 million last week, although single-day inflows rebounded to approximately US$3.5 million on August 6.
Ripple expands XRP ledger strategy
Despite the recent weakness in XRP prices, Ripple continues to expand XRPL's institutional application scenarios. On August 3, Ripple announced its investment in ZILO and Licuado, which focus on tokenized investment funds and institutional asset trading infrastructure. Ripple plans to combine the capabilities of the two companies with XRPL infrastructure to support the issuance, custody, transfer and use of tokenized assets as collateral. Its dollar-backed stablecoin Ripple USD (RLUSD) is designed to provide cash support for delivery and payment transactions.
How to buy XRP
XRP can be purchased through major cryptocurrency exchanges and usually supports transactions using fiat or other cryptocurrencies. Buyers can deposit XRP on an exchange or transfer it to a compatible self-managed wallet. Different from proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies, XRP cannot ensure the security of XRP books through protoplasm. The network uses a consensus protocol involving independent verifiers.
Like other cryptocurrencies, XRP prices fluctuate sharply. Its prices can react violently to regulatory policies, broader crypto market conditions, Ripple-related developments, and changes in investor demand.
