Thaler said Bitcoin BIP-110 lacked miners 'consensus, with a support rating of only 2.6%

The BIP-110 miners 'signal support rate is only 2.56%, far from reaching the 55% threshold required for activation.

The mandatory signal window opens today at a block height of 961,632; nodes executing the mandatory rules will reject any block that does not express support, regardless of the final result. At the same time, developer Chris Guida has refactored a 2017 proof-of-work hard-fork code as an alternative solution, and its contributors have seriously divided their evaluation of the solution.

The deadline for the Bitcoin data restriction proposal is approaching, with a support rating of only 2.56%

With only 2.6% of miners supporting it, BIP-110 failed to gain widespread support from miners. At a block height of 961,632, nodes implementing the proposal will reject non-signal blocks. After that, BIP-110 will either stall or fork to an insignificant state, and the Bitcoin network will operate normally. Bitcoin is working as designed. -- Michael Saylor, August 8, 2026

The mandatory signal window for BIP-110 opened today at a block height of 961,632, and miners 'support for the proposal is only 2.56%, less than one-twentieth of the 55% share required for voluntary lock-in. From this block to a block height of 963,647, any node running Bitcoin Knots (an alternative Bitcoin software client) with BIP-110 mandatory rules enabled will reject all blocks that do not have version bit 4 (the flag used by miners to indicate readiness) set, regardless of whether the 55% threshold is met. If a lockdown occurs, it must be completed by block 963, 648 at the latest; full activation of the new rule will occur after blocks 965, 664.

What BIP-110 actually changed and why it exists

BIP-110, officially known as "Reducing Temporary Soft Forks of Data," will implement a one-year consensus limit on Bitcoin transactions. According to the proposal text in the Bitcoin BIP repository, BIP-110 limits most new output scripts to 34 bytes, OP_RETURN to 83 bytes, and most data push to 256 bytes. Existing tokens will not be affected and these rules will automatically expire approximately one year after activation.

The proposal was written by the pseudonym Dathon Ohm, and Luke Dashjr, a core and long-term contributor to Bitcoin, is listed in the repository as a contributor to the original draft and recommendations. The proposal received a BIP number on December 3, 2025. The proposal's warehouse currently lists its status as "Draft." Some recent reports said it reached a "complete" status in June.

Specific sources of 2.56% support

Signal that support is slowly climbing from a low base. The Ocean Mining Pool mined the first BIP-110 signal block in March 2026 and still maintains signal support with DATUM, Ocean's block template distribution tool.

Time period/approximate signal rate:
Late June 2026/ ~0.3%
Late July 2026/ ~2.6%
August 1-3, 2026/ ~2.5%
August 4-8, 2026/ ~2.56%

Opposition comes from multiple sources and is very strong: Both Blockstream CEO Adam Back and Casa's Jameson Lopp criticized the proposal's design. Strategy's Michael Saylor, whose accounts show the company held 842,138 BTC as of August 3, 2026, also expressed opposition.

Outcome of actual decisions in blocks 963, 648

From a technical perspective, two outcomes are currently possible, and neither depends on persuasion. If the signal support rate remains at the current level, BIP-110 will not be able to reach 1,109 of the 2,016 blocks required for this round of lockdown, and deployment will not be able to activate on time.

Nodes that enforce rules during this period will eventually follow any chain generated by a few signal miners, which produces block speeds much lower than the chains used by most networks. Conversely, if a large mining pool changes its position before Block 963,648 (no mining pool currently expresses an intention to do so), lockdown becomes possible and restrictions will take effect in Block 965,664.

Timeline

December 3, 2025: BIP-110 was numbered.
March 2026: The first signal block is excavated in the Ocean Mining Pool.
July 18-19, 2026: Saylor published an article opposing the proposal.
August 1, 2026: Rumors about delayed activation were quickly withdrawn after spreading.
August 4, 2026: Guida confirmed the refactoring proof-of-work alternative code.
August 8-9, 2026: Mandatory signal window opens at block height of 961,632.

The timeline of BIP-110 traces the entire process from the formal numbering of the proposal in December 2025, to early miners signaling, public debate and technical updates, to the mandatory signaling window opening on August 8-9, 2026.
