XRP Ledger plans to expand its transaction comment field by more than a thousand times, sparking heated discussions in the community.
A proposal to increase the limit of the transaction comment field of XRP Ledger (XRPL) from 1KB to approximately 1.3MB has sparked heated discussions among blockchain developers and users. The expansion in this plan is more than a thousandfold and aims to open up new possibilities for embedding various content directly in XRPL transactions.
Promote major upgrades: expectations and concerns coexist
The proposal was proposed by multiple contributors, including Vet, a member of the XRPL Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to promoting the development of the XRP Ledger ecosystem. Proponents believe that the expanded comment field will allow blockchain users to upload multiple files in a single XRPL transaction, such as music clips, Short Video clips, software source code, and compressed packages.
Proponents claim that this enhancement is in line with XRPL's decentralization philosophy. They pointed out that network participants should have the right to choose to store any type of content on the blockchain as long as they are willing to pay the corresponding transaction fees.
However, despite the enthusiasm, some members of the blockchain community have called for caution, with experts warning that this may pose technical challenges and risks.
Technical objections and industry experts warn
Former Ripple developer relations director Matt Hamilton has become a major critic of the proposal. He pointed to the basic architecture of XRPL, calling the expansion "a very bad idea" and emphasized that the ledger was originally designed as a distributed payment system, not a file sharing platform.
Hamilton emphasized that every verification node and full node on the XRPL must store a complete transaction history, so embedding large files could lead to exponential growth in the blockchain database.
He warned that expanding database size could significantly increase hardware requirements and make it costly for independent operators to maintain nodes. In the long run, this will reduce network engagement and weaken XRPL's decentralized nature.
Hamilton recommends considering other ways to store large data on a decentralized network. He mentioned that systems like Filecoin, which are specifically used for decentralized storage of large files, are a more practical solution. He believes that while retaining the core design of XRPL and integrating dedicated storage protocols can allow users to use multimedia content without burdening the ledger or compromising its efficiency.
