Metaplanet CEO denies selling bitcoins, clarifies that transfers are normal operations
Metaplanet CEO Simon Grovich denied rumors that the company sold bitcoins. Previously, a transfer of 5014 bitcoins worth approximately US$320 million occurred between the company's wallets, which attracted outside attention.
Grovich posted on platform X: "In the past 24 hours, we have transferred 5014 bitcoins between escrow addresses in Metaplanet. This is a regular hosting operation. We haven't sold any bitcoins, and our position is still 43000." He said that because Metaplanet disclosed its Bitcoin address, these transfer records could be tracked in real time so that the outside world could see the relevant movements.
Recently, Strategy, a U.S. bitcoin finance company, sold 6948 bitcoins (worth approximately US$432.5 million), a move that intensified market speculation that Metaplane may also be considering reducing some of its positions. Grovic's clarification was made against this background.
At the same time, the Tokyo-listed company launched its fixed-rate debt program, BitBonds, to provide it with another financing channel. Metaplanet continues to increase its holdings of bitcoins, purchasing 5075 bitcoins in the first quarter of 2026, and another 1005 bitcoins in June, with a total position of 43000 bitcoins, worth approximately US$3 billion.
Metaplanet said the plan could be used for future purchases of Bitcoin and other corporate purposes. Through debt financing, companies can raise cash without immediately issuing additional shares or selling bitcoin.
Metplanet said in a statement: "Based on market conditions and other factors, the company plans to continue to issue bonds under the plan; in the medium to long term, as the issuance scale expands, the company will implement necessary arrangements to enable public bond issuance in accordance with securities registration statements or similar documents."
This plan expands Metaplanet's capital markets strategy to gradually build one of the largest publicly traded company bitcoin reserves outside the United States. However, while BitBonds provided Metaplanet with the funds it needed to purchase Bitcoin, it also increased the company's debt burden. If the price of Bitcoin falls, the company will still have to repay its debt on schedule.
