The target slot time for the Solana mainnet was reduced from 400 ms to 350 ms, effective in the 1020th epoch. This is the first of four 50-millisecond reductions planned, with the ultimate goal of 200 milliseconds. The upper calculation limit for each slot is scaled down to maintain the theoretical peak at approximately 250 million units per second.
Solana slot time dropped to 350 milliseconds
Jacob Creech, vice president of technology at the Solana Foundation, posted on social media to mark the change. "We are entering a new era of 350 milliseconds," he said, noting that 300 milliseconds is the next goal. Later, a foundation tracker showed that the average slot time had dropped to 360 milliseconds, compared with the value set in the network's initial protocol of 400 milliseconds.
This feature was activated in time slot 440,208,000 (the first time slot of the 1019th era), but due to an era delay, the network maintained the previous 400-millisecond target before entering the 1020th era.
Anza, the research institute that maintains the Agave verifier client, deployed this step in its Agave v4.2 version, which also includes multiple other protocol changes.
Anza and Helius executives assess throughput improvement
Governance proposal SIMD-0525 stipulates that three more 50-millisecond reductions will be made before the network reaches the 200-millisecond goal. Each stage has an independent function switch. The document also gradually reduces the upper working limit for each time slot, so the validator does not process more than current levels of calculations per second.
Anza CEO Brennan Watt confirmed that the test network slot time has dropped to 182 milliseconds, while browsing data showed an average of 193 milliseconds over the past hour. The decline on the test online is implemented approximately every two eras.
Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz said in a podcast that shorter time slots combined with higher block caps will increase network throughput fourfold in the short term. At 350 milliseconds, the maximum block calculation volume dropped to 87.5 million units, compared with the upper limit of 100 million units adopted by the main network in July. The theoretical maximum remains at about 250 million units per second.
Solana validators face stricter time windows
Leaders still hold four consecutive slots, so their window has been shortened from 1.6 seconds to 1.4 seconds, further tightening handover and propagation margins between validator sets, which are themselves under pressure from faster block production.
Off-chain software poses another challenge because some client constants, browsers, and indexers still view the 400-millisecond time slot as a fixed value rather than a value read from the cluster.
The foundation released a phased plan in June, setting independent switches on each of the four steps so that operators can suspend the process if the block skipping rate exceeds the validator's established tolerance level. The test network took the first step of 350 milliseconds on August 5 and is currently running under the effective 200 milliseconds target; while the development network is at the 300 milliseconds level, its 250 milliseconds switch has been turned on but has not yet taken effect.
