Telegram's t.me domain name suspended, affecting encryption services
On Monday (July 13), Telegram's t.me domain name was unexpectedly suspended at the registry level, making short links used by millions of users to access its encryption services unusable. The suspension affects user access to Telegram's TON-based wallet service, Mini Apps and Open Network (TON) related services.
According to relevant reports, after the incident was first exposed on July 13, all t.me addresses could not be resolved because the.me Registry placed the domain name in a "reserved" status. This failure has a greater impact on the cryptocurrency field, because t.me is not just a simple short URL service, it is also the main entry point to the Telegram chain ecosystem. According to the Telegram wallet documentation, users usually launch Telegram's managed wallet through t.me/wallet to purchase, store and transfer USDT, Bitcoin, and TON native token Gram (GRAM). When domain names go offline, the main entrance to the ecosystem also disappears.
The interruption was triggered by the "serverHold" status, an Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) code applied by the.me Domain Registry (not Telegram's domain registrar). According to relevant ICANN documents, this status will delete the DNS records of the domain name from the Internet, which means that websites, emails and other related services that rely on the domain name will not be able to operate. The registry may set this status on domain names for a variety of reasons, including arrears, verification problems, or suspected fraud, security incidents, etc. As of press time, neither Telegram nor the.me Registry had explained the reasons for the retention.
.me domain name is Montenegro's country code top-level domain. Because "me" is easily understood as a universal suffix, it is widely used in brand building around the world. Its technical operations are handled by Identity Digital, while commercial affairs are managed by a registration office in Montenegro. According to relevant reports, Telegram has signed a cooperation agreement with the Registry, which designated the t.me domain name as Telegram's short link domain name. This arrangement means that the domain name is at the heart of all access processes to the entire Telegram messaging ecosystem and its blockchain services.
Risks exposed
TON claims to be a Layer 1 blockchain co-developed by Telegram and the open source community. Telegram is the largest distribution platform for mainstream users. According to TON's official website, Gram's offer was US$1.59 on Monday, down 1.99% in the past 24 hours, and its market value is approximately US$4.33 billion, ranking 21st on CoinMarketCap. The scope of use of t.me is not limited to wallets: collectible Telegram usernames and phone numbers are tokenized into TON-based digital assets that can be accessed via t.me/username;Telegram gifts are converted to TON NFT; mini apps are connected to the blockchain through TON Connect, and are usually launched in communication software using the t.me link. In fact, all of the above operations rely on the normal operation of the short domain name.
The next step worth noting is whether the.me registry will remove the "server reservation" status or explain why it is enabled. Also be aware of whether Telegram will create alternate domain names to restore access to its encrypted services while the problem persists. Until then, this important entry point to the cryptocurrency industry-the blockchain ecosystem portal behind it with more than $4.33 billion in tokens-will become even more difficult to use.
