Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joins OKX Board of Directors

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially joined OKX Board of Directors, formalizing the advisory role he has provided since 2023. OKX founder and CEO Xu Mingxing confirmed the news in an article on the X platform on July 20.

Xu Mingxing wrote: "Governor Cuomo has been a visionary voice for OKX for many years. He joined the board of directors to formalize our partnership that has previously shaped U.S. market strategy as a governance role." He added that in building OKX into a traditional financial and digital financial infrastructure layer, they need talents like Cuomo who understand the true logic of government, institutions and markets.

Como's public resume is outstanding: he served as the 56th governor of New York State from 2011 to 2021, previously served as New York State Attorney General, and earlier served as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

What role did Cuomo previously play in OKX?

In June this year, OKX and Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, jointly announced the establishment of a joint venture called OKXICE, with each party holding 50%, aiming to tokenize stocks and futures listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Cuomo co-chairs the joint venture with Trab Brand, senior vice president of ICE Futures Exchange.

The joint venture plans to register as a U.S. broker-dealer and futures commission dealer after receiving regulatory approval. If approved, OKX said its 120 million users will be able to obtain tokenized versions of NYSE stocks and ICE futures contracts. According to reports, Intercontinental Exchange invested in OKX in March this year with a valuation of approximately US$25 billion. According to Bloomberg, the investment amount is approximately US$200 million.

In June this year, Cuomo said of the joint venture: "This is not about cryptocurrency, it is about blockchain and fintech, and the application of blockchain to other assets."

Political comeback with controversy

Como is not without controversy-his exit from politics, especially as governor of New York, stems from sexual harassment allegations filed by multiple women. He himself has repeatedly denied these allegations. Recently, he tried to return to politics by running for the 2025 New York mayoral race, but ultimately lost to Zoran Mamdani. He has since said that in addition to providing advice to some non-profit organizations, he will devote most of his energy to OKX's joint ventures. Although he said he had no plans to run again, he did not completely rule out the possibility. He once told reporters: "Never say never."

When Cuomo began providing advisory services to OKX in 2023, the company was facing an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice. The case was closed in 2025. OKX pleaded guilty to violating anti-money laundering regulations and paid fines of more than $500 million, before restarting its U.S. operations. Despite the controversy, Cuomo's joining the board has given the company a position that many cryptocurrency organizations cannot achieve.

Currently, OKX has obtained licenses in the United States, United Arab Emirates, European Economic Area, Singapore and Australia, and publishes monthly reserve certificate reports.
