The London Stock Exchange plans to launch an overnight ETP trading platform in 2027

The London Stock Exchange plans to launch an independent overnight trading platform in the first half of 2027 to extend trading hours for listed investment products beyond the main day trading hours. The new market will operate from 5 pm London time to 7:50 am the next day, with a 30-minute pause between 6:30 pm and 7:00 pm for end-of-day processing. The main trading platform of the London Stock Exchange will retain the existing trading session from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The combined schedule will allow investors to trade almost continuously during the working week, although the overnight platform will remain operationally independent of the main exchange.

Julia Hogart, CEO of the London Stock Exchange, said London's time zone helps the market serve international investors seeking to invest in UK and global assets. Retail demand is expected to be strongest from Asia, as overnight trading hours will overlap with Asian daytime trading hours.

More than 2600 products will be targeted

The platform will initially support more than 2600 exchange-traded products on the London Stock Exchange, including funds that track British and U.S. stock indices. Starting with exchange-traded products can avoid some of the regulatory and operational complexities faced by trading company stocks individually overnight. Otherwise, issuers will need to manage corporate disclosures, price-sensitive announcements and other obligations over longer trading hours. The London Stock Exchange is still studying these issues to decide whether to increase trading in individual stocks. The new platform will also support smart trading tools for portfolio analysis, market monitoring, position adjustments and automated execution.

Liquidity will remain the core test. Longer trading hours allow investors to respond more quickly after economic data is released and major corporate events, but a thinner overnight order book may lead to wider bid-ask spreads and weaker price discovery than in major day markets.

Cryptocurrencies push traditional markets to extend trading hours

The London Stock Exchange's plans follow a broader shift in trading models influenced by the cryptocurrency market, where investors do not have to wait for the exchange to reopen to respond to news. Coinbase has expanded its business from digital assets to tokenized U.S. stocks (backed by underlying stocks), while Ondo Finance now provides round-the-clock subscription and redemption services for selected tokenized stocks and ETFs. Traditional exchanges are also extending trading hours. Nasdaq plans to extend weekday trading to 23 hours, the Chicago Board Options Exchange is preparing to launch a 23-hour trading session for U.S. stocks, and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange has opened all-day weekend trading for cryptocurrency futures and options.

The first phase of the London Stock Exchange will keep the underlying products within the traditional exchange infrastructure rather than migrating to the blockchain track. Its proposed overnight trading session would start with exchange-traded products and later consider expanding to individual stocks.
