Ithaca hard fork targets transaction continuity

Polygon Labs has confirmed that the Ithaca upgrade will be activated on the Polygon main network at a block height of 50,185,000 after successful deployment of the Amoy testnet. The fork is planned to be implemented at around 2 p.m. UTC on July 29.

The core feature of this upgrade is automatic failover: if block producers stall, the network will bypass interruptions rather than wait, keeping transactions going without relying on human intervention. This is a meaningful improvement for any application that relies on stable throughput, especially payment processes.

In addition, the upgrade introduces new filters designed to filter out transactions that may undermine network stability, adding a layer of protection at the protocol level without relying on application-side logic.

Provides more visibility to node operators

In addition to failover mechanisms, Ithaca also provides node operators with enhanced tools to monitor network health in real time. Better observability means infrastructure teams can detect and respond to problems earlier, shortening the window of time between problems appearing and being resolved.

The Ithaca upgrade is the latest in a series of continuous improvements to the Polygon PoS chain. Earlier this year, the Giugliano hard fork achieved faster transaction finalization and embedded fee parameters directly into the block header, while the Zurich hard fork increased the block gas cap and shortened block time to support higher payment throughput. On this basis, Ithaca focuses on improving network resilience-even if individual components encounter unexpected conditions, the network can still operate smoothly.
