On Saturday, OpenAI's ChatGPT went down for nearly 50 minutes globally, preventing users from accessing chatbots, mobile applications, developer APIs and Codex coding platform.

OpenAI has confirmed a global ChatGPT failure that started around 5 a.m. ET on Saturday and recovered about an hour later.
The failure also affected the company's developer API and Codex coding platform, with more than 3000 reports received on the failure reporting platform.
The outage has once again sparked a long-standing discussion in the encryption field about the risks of centralization of artificial intelligence infrastructure.
OpenAI status page confirms global ChatGPT failures
Shortly after 5:30 a.m. EST, the company marked an increase in error rates on its status page involving ChatGPT, Codex, and up to 12 separate API endpoints. Fault traffic points to multiple regions including the United States, Europe, India, Japan and Australia. Automated workflows for paying developers lose API access along with ordinary consumers 'online and mobile accounts.
More than 3000 users reported problems on the fault reporting platform, of which 79% related to ChatGPT itself, 9% related to mobile applications, and 8% related to the Codex platform. The outage began at about 5 a.m. EDT (10 a.m. GMT) and normal service resumed about an hour later.
OpenAI said on its status page that it has taken mitigation measures and is monitoring the recovery, but has not announced the reason.
Bittensor and decentralized computing draw new attention
Cryptographic developers have been promoting a version of this idea for years. Vitalik Buterin argued after Cloudflare collapsed in November 2025 that Ethereum (ETH) applications should remain running normally even if mainstream service providers went down. That failure paralyzed nearly 20% of the network and also took several large exchanges and wallet service providers offline.
Decentralized computing networks are positioning themselves as an alternative, with Bittensor (TAO) being the largest, incentivizing contributors to generate and score machine learning output in professional subnets by paying TAO tokens. On Saturday, the token traded for approximately $194 and had a market value of approximately $1.9 billion. TAO fell about 3.6% in 24 hours, but available transaction data does not directly link this fluctuation to the outage. The valuation gap between the two camps remains significant. An industry assessment shows that the enterprise value of centralized artificial intelligence is approximately US$12 trillion, and the decentralized field is approximately US$12 billion.
Saturday's failure was the second in three days for OpenAI. ChatGPT, Codex and API experienced an increase in error rates on July 23. The company took mitigation measures that afternoon, but these three services went offline again this weekend.
