Coinbase releases quantum security plan, and the Bitcoin Security Alliance is established
Bitcoin quantum security issues quickly became focus after Coinbase announced a detailed plan to prepare Bitcoin infrastructure for future development of quantum computing.
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, said quantum computing does not currently pose a direct threat to Bitcoin. But he pointed out that preparations must be started before machines are powerful enough to challenge existing encryption technologies.
The announcement comes as the Bitcoin Security Consortium was officially established, with members including BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Strategy, Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, Blockstream, Galaxy and Coinbase.
Coinbase fully expands Bitcoin quantum security plan
Armstrong said the industry should be ready now because no one knows when fault-tolerant quantum computers will come out. He mentioned that Coinbase established the Independent Advisory Committee on Quantum Computing and Blockchain earlier this year to assess actual risks and recommend actionable actions.
The advisory committee concluded that current blockchain encryption technology must be replaced. It also pointed out that migration rather than cryptographic design is the biggest challenge, as millions of users and decentralized networks need to coordinate upgrades.
Coinbase said that its own CoreKMS currently protects approximately 99.9% of its digital assets in custody. The company has begun developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version of its key management platform.
In the next year, Coinbase expects to launch an automated signature pipeline that uses secure enclaves, threshold encryption and secret sharing technologies. According to the company, the system will support post-quantum signature algorithms so that blockchain can begin adopting new encryption standards.
The company has also begun reviewing all encryption systems in its business. Coinbase said it is prioritizing migration based on system importance, exposure and implementation complexity, while setting milestones that will trigger future upgrades.
Coinbase added that it is evaluating the impact of Ethereum's post-quantum roadmap on its Layer 2 network Base before developing more migration plans.
The Bitcoin Security Alliance promises funding and engineering support
Coinbase also revealed that it will hold a working conference with Stanford University in August this year. The conference will provide an opportunity for core Bitcoin developers, cryptographers and researchers to discuss practical strategies for migration in a future when quantum computers may become a reality.
The company stated that as the development process progresses, it plans to hold such meetings regularly to continue technical discussions.
In addition to these discussions, Coinbase is also a founding member of the newly formed Bitcoin Security Alliance. Other members include BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Strategy, Block, Blockstream, Galaxy, Anchorage Digital and ARK Invest.
The organizations have committed to investing a total of $15 million over three years to support developers, researchers and organizations engaged in Bitcoin security development. Members will not be responsible for guiding Bitcoin development or protocol decisions, but instead decide which projects will receive funding.
However, Coinbase said its engineers will be directly involved in open source work to support proposals such as BIP-360 and other post-quantum migration projects.
Despite uncertain timetables, the industry continues to prepare
The alliance will also share information on Bitcoin security developments with investors and the public. Robert Mitchnick, head of digital assets at BlackRock, said core Bitcoin developers are doing valuable work on the project and more funding will help improve the security of the Bitcoin network in the long term.
The specific financial commitment amounts of all parties were not disclosed, nor were the first batch of recipients of funding announced. It was also unclear whether Galaxy's $5 million quantum spending plan (for quantum signatures, wallet migration and security audits) would be included in the alliance's overall commitment.
