MetaMask on Thursday launched Agent Wallet, a self-managed wallet that allows AI agents to perform on-chain transactions within user-defined limits, further expanding the company's presence in AI-driven cryptocurrency trading.
According to MetaMask, the wallet is aimed at traders and developers who use AI agents to independently monitor the market, identify opportunities, and execute transactions. However, instead of giving full access to the AI proxy wallet, users can set spending limits, approve specific agreements, select risk settings, and choose between "Guardian Mode" and "Beast Mode", which provide different levels of automation.
Agent Wallet supports Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaw, Hermes, OpenCode, as well as Hyperliquid and Ethereum virtual machine compatible networks. It also supports Gas abstraction, allowing users to pay network fees using assets being transferred without having to hold native tokens to the network. The company wrote: "No longer have to worry about paying Gas fees. Agents do not need to hold the chain's native tokens as Gas fees to transfer and redeem money;MetaMask uses the transferred tokens to settle network fees."
Prior to this release, MetaMask made the Agent Wallet available to approximately 200 early users in June. Currently, cryptocurrency companies are racing to build infrastructure for AI agents, allowing them to manage portfolios, execute transactions, and interact with decentralized applications. Coinbase launched Agentic Wallets in February, MoonPay expanded its AI proxy strategy in March, and then expanded its MoonAgents platform to Telegram in July.
MetaMask said that Agent Wallet reduces security risks by enforcing wallet-level permissions, rather than relying on AI agents to operate safely on their own. According to MetaMask, supported transactions are protected through trading simulations, threat scanning, and smart trading MEVs. The company also provides transaction protection, paying out up to $10,000 per month for qualified transactions that pass security checks but still cause losses.
MetaMask said: "This security-first model is why Agent Wallet is built around rules rather than blind delegation. Agents can act, but they must act within boundaries set by users."
