XRP ledger dynamics
Currently, more than US$530 million worth of tokenized real-world assets are stored on the XRP ledger (XRPL), which can be seen by anyone who follows the chain. A newly proposed amendment would allow institutions to keep confidential the size of their positions and the amount transferred.
The XRPL 3.3.0 version released this week contains six proposed amendments. One of them is directly targeted at institutional users and is called "confidential transfers." It targets Multipurpose Tokens (MPTs)-the token format Ripple has been promoting for use in funds, bonds and other financial instruments. Under the proposal, personal balances and payment amounts on MPT can be encrypted, while account and token types remain publicly visible.
Encryption technology allows ledgers to verify mathematical calculations without reading numbers
The technical approach behind confidential transfers relies on an encryption technology that allows ledgers to verify that transaction amounts are balanced without being able to read the amounts. Institutions can transfer assets without having to disclose to the public the size of each position and payment. The accounts involved and the types of tokens transferred are still visible, only the numbers are hidden.
In the first version, this feature was added optional. It only covers direct MPT payments between accounts and does not apply to transactions, custody arrangements or checks on XRPL's built-in decentralized exchanges (DEX). Ripple's stated goal is to remove a barrier that currently makes it difficult for large financial institutions to manage assets on public distributed ledgers without exposing sensitive position data.
This ledger already has institutional users who can benefit from this feature. On-chain data aggregator RWA Point xyz tracks approximately $1.38 billion in real-world assets on XRPL. Of that,$845.7 million was RLUSD, Ondo accounted for $212.6 million, VERT Capital accounted for $116.1 million, Archax accounted for $55.4 million and Societe Generale accounted for $11.6 million. This means that, in addition to RLUSD, there are more than $530 million in tracked tokenized assets.
Ripple has been working hard to expand this number by 2026. In February 2026, Ripple and Aviva Investors jointly announced, and Aviva Investment subsequently launched a tokenized share category of its US dollar liquidity funds on XRPL in July 2026.
Five other amendments address institutional workflows
The remaining five amendments are utilities rather than privacy features. "Batch" allows users to bundle up to eight transactions into one commit and adopts an all-or-nothing model, canceling all operations if any step fails. " Sponsorship " allows one account to bear fees and reserve requirements for another account, eliminating the need for new participants to hold XRP before trading.
"Delegation of authority" allows an account to authorize third parties to submit only certain types of transactions. Fund managers can gain limited signing rights without having to gain full control of the account. "Dynamic MPT" allows token issuers to change certain attributes of a token after it is issued.
3.3.0 The version also includes a series of technical fixes. The XRP ledger operations team said the update reduced node memory usage by at least 10% to 15%, and increased the speed at which nodes synchronize with other parts of the network.
These changes have not yet taken effect. All XRPL amendments require continued support from at least 80% of trusted verifiers within two weeks to be activated. The true measure of success for confidential transfers will come after the vote. Whether institutions like Aviva or Ondo, which already issue assets on their books, choose to encrypt their balances and transfer sizes or make them publicly visible will be a crucial test.
