The Bitcoin address that had been sleeping for 15.1 years was suddenly transferred, and 8.54 BTC pieces were worth about US$538,000.

On August 16, a bitcoin (BTC) worth about US$538,000 was transferred after sleeping for 15.1 years. If sold at current prices, the estimated return on this position is as high as 461,981%.

Key Points

The 8.54 BTC was first received on June 13, 2011, when the Bitcoin price was about US$14.

After 15.1 years of silence, all 8.54 BTC pieces were transferred in one transaction, valued at approximately US$538,000 at the time.

This address has no public ownership information, so the identity of the holder and the reason for transferring funds are not clear.

Awakening of Bitcoin addresses

According to blockchain monitoring data, an address starting with "1Emi" received 8.54 BTC on June 13, 2011, and no transaction has occurred for more than 15 years since then. Bitcoin was priced at about $14 at the time.

On August 16, the entire balance of the address was transferred in a transaction and recorded in Block 962,770. At approximately US$538,000, a sale would achieve an increase of approximately 461,981% compared to the 2011 cost basis.

This transfer cannot determine whether the holder has sold these bitcoins, and the address does not have any public ownership information. Holders may transfer Bitcoin between wallets for security or custody reasons without having to send it to an exchange or achieve a profit.

Active background of sleeping wallet

The activity of sleeping wallets often attracts attention, because large amounts of bitcoin in Bitcoin's early days were thought to be inaccessible because the holder lost his private key or abandoned the wallet. The market size in 2011 was much smaller than it is now and the liquidity is lower, so there are relatively few addresses that have survived during that period and can still transfer funds.

"Coin Day Destruction" is one of the indicators used by traders to identify such transfers. It records the accumulated "age" of Bitcoin while it has not been moved. A 2011 balance when transferred will produce a large coin day destruction reading, but this indicator cannot determine whether the transfer is for sale, custody change, or other purposes.

Recently, many transfers of sleeping wallets have often been directed to professional trading infrastructure, so a single transaction does not prove to be an immediate market sell-off. Earlier this month, 49.97 BTC was transferred from another 2011 address; last week, a wallet holding millions of dollars that had been dormant for 12 years also transferred funds. In addition, a giant whale that had been sleeping for eight years transferred approximately US$383 million, and in a large-scale transfer in 2024, approximately US$2 billion of Bitcoin that had not been touched since 2013 was moved. Analysts attributed the previous $2 billion transfer to a rebalancing by custodians, suggesting that ancient address activity may have multiple explanations beyond profit-taking.
