The U.S. government transferred US$288.3 million worth of bitcoins and Ethereum to Coinbase Prime
The wallet marked by the U.S. government department transferred 3,800.5 bitcoins and 30,000 Ethereum to Coinbase Prime's deposit address within seven hours, transferring approximately US$288.3 million in seized cryptocurrency. Blockchain security company PeckShield monitored these Bitcoin and Ethereum deposits. At the time of transfer, Bitcoin was worth approximately US$239 million and Ethereum was worth approximately US$49 million.
These assets arrive in batches through multiple transactions rather than being transferred in a single wallet. Coinbase Prime provides institutional custody, trading and execution services, but the behavior of deposits does not indicate that any of the assets have been sold. The U.S. Marshals Service chose Coinbase Prime in 2024 to custody and trade large-cap digital assets held through the federal asset forfeiture program.
Ethereum from New Jersey drug case
The 30,000 Ethereum pieces originated from assets seized in a New Jersey drug case involving Thomas William Dunbar and his brothers James Castelluzzo and Christopher Castelluzzo. The defendant used bitcoins derived from dark web drug sales to purchase the Ethereum during its initial token offering in 2014. Brian Kruson later took control of the wallet and moved the assets to a government address during a 2022 search. Federal prosecutors sought to seize the 30,000 Ethereum and related assets in November 2023. When the civil lawsuit was filed, the cryptocurrencies were worth approximately $54 million.
The Bitcoin batch contains assets related to multiple federal cases, including assets held by the bankrupt BTC-e exchange and dark-web drug dealer Ryan Farres. Prosecutors had previously sought to seize 4,000 bitcoins related to Fares 'illegal sale of alprazolam.
Transfer tests Fed policy
The transfer occurred after the U.S. government made smaller deposits to Coinbase Prime in 2026. One seized money wallet sent 3.233 Ethereum pieces to the platform in May, while another FTX and Alameda confiscated wallet subsequently transferred 98,590 LINK pieces to Coinbase Prime. President Donald Trump's "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve" executive order requires that ultimately confiscated bitcoins should be held rather than sold after being transferred to reserves. Ethereum and other assets belong to a separate U.S. digital asset reserve, and the Treasury Secretary can decide on their disposal and management strategies. The executive order allows government digital assets to be used for victim compensation, law enforcement actions, legal confiscation obligations, or to enforce court orders.
