TON Telegram domain name crisis: Access to core services blocked
Telegram's t.me domain name was unexpectedly suspended, preventing millions of users from accessing the messaging platform's core encryption services related to the TON blockchain. On July 13, the domain name was suspended at the registry level, effectively blocking the normal use of important functions.
What is the trigger for domain name suspension?
The.me domain name registry has imposed a "server reserved" status on t.me, making it inaccessible. The registry is managed by the Montenegrin team and controls Telegram's widely used domain names. The "server-reserved" code is critical because it removes DNS records for domain names, making the relevant website or service inaccessible. There are many reasons for such actions, including payment issues, verification failures, or possible fraud. Although the specific reason for the suspension is unclear, neither Telegram nor the registry has commented on the matter.
How are services within the Telegram ecosystem affected?
Since Telegram uses t.me for a variety of blockchain services, this outage has affected key functions such as its managed wallet. The wallet manages assets such as USDT, Bitcoin and Gram (TON). As the main entry point for these services, any interruption can have a serious impact on users. The me domain name forms the technical foundation of the Telegram messaging ecosystem and its blockchain services, providing a unified access portal for Mini Apps and wallets.
The suspension also affects other features that rely on the domain name, including digital favorites username and NFT. These services, as well as Mini Apps accessible through TON Connect, are now inaccessible, demonstrating the deep reliance of the Telegram ecosystem on the single domain name.
Gram token fell to US$1.59, a drop of nearly 2%. TON has a market value of US$4.33 billion, ranking 21st in the world. The outage affected a key entry point for Telegram's managed wallet. Several services, including Mini Apps, are no longer accessible.
