Jeff Bezos invests in British AI materials startup CuspAI
Jeff Bezos has joined the ranks of investors to support British startup CuspAI to complete a round of approximately US$450 million in financing. Existing investor Temasek also participated in the round, highlighting the growing confidence that artificial intelligence can accelerate one of the slowest and most expensive aspects of technology development-discovering new materials for advanced semiconductors.
This investment is a sign of widespread changes in the AI competitive landscape. Although the field has previously focused on chatbots and big-language models, future competitive advantage may depend more on the materials technology behind making faster and better chips.
Cambridge-based CuspAI is committed to developing AI solutions to help create materials for semiconductors, batteries, catalysts and thin films. The company has built an AI Materials Foundry that works with industry partners to develop compounds designed for specific goals, rather than relying solely on known materials.
Jeff Bezos is betting on AI science
Not every seemingly promising material can actually exist. This is why scientists are concerned about thermodynamic stability. This indicator measures whether the crystal structure can withstand the test of time without degradation or decomposition into different components. With modern artificial intelligence models, scientists can calculate the energy state of a material before it is synthesized, eliminating infeasible options and focusing on those with the highest probability of success.
Google DeepMind demonstrated this approach in its 2023 paper on GNoME (Materials Exploration Map Network) published in the journal Nature.

These predictably stable materials have been added to the Materials Project database for experiments by researchers around the world.
Scientists have further advanced this concept. In an article published in Communication Materials in 2025, the team working on the ME-AI (Materials Experts-Artificial Intelligence) project shared an overview of their concept, which combines the expertise of materials scientists with machine learning technology to predict the future behavior of materials.

Taken together, these efforts demonstrate how AI can transform the material discovery process from extensive search to focused design.
Bezos 'investment reflects a broader AI transformation
CuspAI did not disclose Bezos' specific investment amount, nor did it announce a complete list of investors in the latest round of financing. However, the new round of funding shows growing investor interest in AI applications in areas other than software, including science and high-tech manufacturing.
As CuspAI shortens the discovery time of new material semiconductors, faster development of chip manufacturing in various industries will also become possible. If materials development accelerates, progress will also be made in batteries, clean energy, industrial chemicals, and next-generation AI infrastructure. Bezos 'massive financial support shows that investors have realized that innovation in the physical sciences-not just better AI models-could be the next breakthrough in technology development.
