Cryptocurrency adoption news
South Korea's largest technology group is accelerating its entry into digital finance. Samsung SDS, an IT services subsidiary of Samsung Group, confirmed on July 30 that it is actively discussing with Dunamu, operator of cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, on jointly building stablecoins and artificial intelligence-based payment system infrastructure.
Samsung SDS CEO Lee Jae-yong disclosed relevant negotiations during the second quarter earnings conference call. He said that the company has completed end-to-end testing of the entire stablecoin process, covering all aspects from issuance to settlement. In addition, Samsung SDS also participated in the construction of the Korea Stock Depository's tokenized securities platform, which Lee Jae-yong regarded as proof that the company already has the ability to operate digital assets.
According to reports, Li Zairong characterized the partnership between Samsung SDS and Dunamu as a strategic priority rather than a financial investment. He said that the two sides plan to use Samsung SDS's cloud computing, security and IT capabilities, combined with Dunamu's blockchain experience, to jointly develop specific business models for digital financial infrastructure.
Strategic shareholding deepening cooperation
The investment supporting this cooperation has been completed in May 2026. Samsung SDS, Samsung Securities and Samsung Card reached an agreement at the time to jointly acquire a 4% stake in Dunamu, a move that closely tied multiple Samsung affiliates to the Korean digital asset field. Li Zairong said that the acquisition has strategic purposes and is not a passive holding of financial assets.
Shortly before the disclosure of this information on July 30, Samsung Electronics had separately announced that it would add stablecoin support to Samsung's wallet. This move, together with negotiations with Dunamu, shows that Samsung Group's business units are collaborating to advance digital payments and asset infrastructure. Samsung SDS did not respond to requests for comment after the earnings conference call, and Dunamu declined to comment.

Growth in cloud computing demand drives second-quarter revenue to rise
Samsung SDS announced on July 30 that second-quarter revenue was 3.72 trillion won (approximately US$2.6 billion), a year-on-year increase of 5.9%. Cloud computing services are the main driver of growth. Total cloud computing revenue increased by 17% year-on-year, of which external cloud computing business revenue increased significantly by 75% due to the surge in demand for the company's cloud platforms and GPU as a service products.
In addition, the company disclosed a multi-year AI infrastructure plan during a conference call. The goal is to expand the current 110 MW AI infrastructure capacity to 230 MW by 2029, and the long-term goal is to increase the capacity to more than 800 MW by 2031. Digital financial services are positioned as part of this large-scale construction.
