BNB Chain Wallet Incident Exposes Web3 Security Risks Outside of Smart Contract Audits

BNB Chain disclosed that a former employee still holds wallet access for official token tutorials after leaving the company. The company said the wallet was later privately used to issue ASTEROID tokens independently, exposing a security gap that went beyond smart contract vulnerabilities and extended to the employee resignation process.

According to BNB Chain, the wallet originally appeared in a tutorial demonstrating how to deploy Meme tokens. Although the employee later left the company, the relevant mnemonic words were still kept by him. This individual allegedly generated new private keys and deployed ASTEROID tokens without BNB Chain knowing it.

The company expressly states that it has no association, endorsement, control or affiliation with the token. However, since the wallet had appeared in official educational materials and its on-chain history was publicly visible, it quickly attracted market attention, with many traders associating addresses with BNB Chain.

ASTEROID tokens rose rapidly within hours of issuance, with an estimated market cap of nearly $10 million and trading volume of more than $20.5 million during the same period.

However, after BNB Chain issued a public statement, market sentiment reversed, and the token's valuation fell by approximately 52.59%, and the market value fell below US$3 million in approximately 20 minutes.

Wallet management becomes an increasingly prominent operational security issue

This incident shifted the focus to wallet lifecycle management rather than traditional blockchain exploit. Unlike corporate accounts, blockchain wallets cannot be disabled directly when employees leave. Anyone with a mnemonic can continue to access the wallet indefinitely.

In addition, public blockchain records are permanent. Wallets used for tutorials, marketing campaigns, or educational content build credibility over time. Therefore, the unauthorized reuse of these wallets can cause confusion and expose organizations to reputational risk.

Many blockchain projects have invested significant resources in smart contract auditing and multi-signature protection. However, in the employee resignation process, educational wallets are often ignored. As a result, demonstration wallets that are not properly discarded can become long-term hazards.

Stronger wallet governance becomes important

Security discussions surrounding this incident point out that stricter wallet lifecycle management could reduce similar risks across the industry. Project parties can rotate wallet credentials, use one-time testnet wallets for demonstrations, and verify every mnemonic during the employee resignation process.

In addition, organizations can issue on-chain deprecation notices for wallets that no longer represent official activities, helping to distinguish inactive company addresses from unauthorized future uses.

BNB Chain also said it was cooperating with relevant authorities and taking legal action against the former employee for unauthorized use of the wallet. This response highlights the urgent need to establish a formal governance framework for educational content, marketing activities and wallets used in public presentations.

Conclusion

This incident expands the discussion of Web3 security beyond smart contract protection and emphasizes the importance of operational controls. A sound employee resignation process and rigorous wallet life cycle management help organizations reduce operational risks while protecting their reputation and public blockchain identity.
