Mastercard completes the acquisition of Ripple partner BVNK to expand stablecoin payment infrastructure

Mastercard has officially completed the acquisition of financial technology platform BVNK, incorporating its long-term partner Ripple into the expanding stablecoin payment strategy. The transaction strengthens MasterCard's blockchain payment infrastructure while consolidating its role as a bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.

MasterCard has not developed its own digital currency, but continues to expand the infrastructure that allows companies to transfer funds between traditional payment networks and blockchain-based payment networks. The acquisition comes at a time when the global stablecoin market exceeds US$309 billion and corporate demand for institutional settlement solutions is growing.

BVNK provides payment infrastructure in more than 130 countries, allowing companies to convert, hold, transfer and store fiat currencies and digital assets. As a result, MasterCard plans to integrate these capabilities into its network to improve cross-border corporate payments, treasury operations and settlement services for banks and fintech companies.

John Lambert, chief product officer of Mastercard, said that future payment systems will rely on multiple forms of digital currencies to work together. He pointed out that fiat currencies, stablecoins and tokenized deposits must operate in interconnected financial networks. He added that as digital payments evolve, companies that can efficiently connect to these networks will be in the best position.

BVNK's relationship with Ripple strengthens Mastercard's blockchain network

BVNK has maintained close business ties with Ripple since 2024, making this acquisition important to the XRP ecosystem. The platform officially supports XRP in its technology infrastructure, allowing companies to process deposits and external payments through its multi-chain payment network.

As Ripple prepared for the issuance of its corporate stablecoin RLUSD, executives at Standard Custody viewed BVNK as an important infrastructure partner serving B2B and B2C payment flows. In addition, the cooperation also supports Ripple's efforts to extend institutional liquidity from financial institutions to commercial payment channels.

Although Ripple and BVNK have not signed an exclusive agreement, the two companies jointly serve the institutional payments market and jointly advance a number of strategic initiatives. In addition, they are both participating in MasterCard's Crypto Partner Program, in which blockchain companies work together to develop enterprise payment solutions.

The cooperation between the two parties also extends to MasterCard's multi-token network, which focuses on connecting tokenized assets to existing financial infrastructure. In addition, Ripple remains a participant in Mastercard's Central Bank Digital Currency Partnership Program, further connecting the two companies and integrating them into Mastercard's digital asset ecosystem.

Summary

Mastercard's acquisition of BVNK reflects its strategy of expanding its blockchain payment infrastructure rather than issuing digital currencies. At the same time, BVNK's existing partnership with Ripple and its native support for XRP have enhanced MasterCard's position in the growing institutional stablecoin market.
